Saints Trump Cougars in Series Opener

Box Score MORRIS, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team continued its winning streak on Friday with an 18-5 win over the University of Minnesota Morris.
 
The Saints started the game strong with three runs on the bottom of the first. They returned to the field again in the bottom of the second to score two more off a two-RBI single to left field from Tyler Duex (Bloomer, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS (UW-Superior) ).
 
Morris scored one in the top of the third to make it 5-1 on the scoreboard with Saints stepping up to the plate for their biggest inning. A Cougar throwing error scored two for the Saints followed by RBI singles from Brian Minks (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS ) and Trevor Bernsdorf (Meadowlands, Minn./Floodwood HS (Doane) ). A triple to right center from Duex scored two more and that was followed by another triple from Jordan Risse (Sioux Falls, S.D./Washington HS ). Three more hits brought in the last of the nine runs in the inning to put the Saints up 14-1.
 
In the top of the fifth, Morris brought in three runs with a double from Cody Reinke and singles from Jake Schmitz and Kylan Hill.
 
Saints returned to the plate to add three more runs in the bottom of the fifth starting with a triple from Mike Policano (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS ). Sam Christofferson (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS ) and Padraic Getchell (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS (North Dakota) ) had RBIs in the inning.
 
The Cougars batted in one more run in the sixth to secure their five runs for the game and the Saints did the same on a Ryan Burmeister (Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS (Augustana, S.D.) ) RBI to end the game 18-5.
 
Duex chipped in a total of four RBIs for the Saints with Risse and Henderson batting in two apiece. Austin Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) scored three times.
 
Mickie Keuning (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Angelo State)) pitched the win for the Saints with nine strikeouts. Kevin Kunik (Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS ) pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
 
The Saints (22-10, 14-1 UMAC) continue their play against the University of Minnesota Morris tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at noon. Listen to the action live on Saints Sports Net.
