Box Score Regional Web SiteMOLINE, Ill. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team was held in check with only four hits as 15th-ranked Buena Vista University (Iowa) pounded out 15 hits to win 7-1 Wednesday night at the NCAA Division III Augustana Regional.
The Saints will now play tomorrow against DePauw University (Ind.), who upset top-ranked Webster University (Mo.) 2-1 to begin the day. A CSS loss would end its season.
Austin Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) led off Wednesday night's game with a single and then advanced to third after a Beaver error. However, the Saints would strikeout three straight times to leave Colvard at third.
Buena Vista had runners on third base in both the first and second innings, but CSS starter
Andy Davis (Chippewa Falls, Wis./McDonell HS ) got out of trouble in both instances.
The Beavers (37-7) finally broke through in the bottom of the third as a Tanner Truesdell RBI single made it 1-0.
Padraic Getchell (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS (North Dakota) ) threw out a runner at the plate on that play to hold the Beavers to one run that inning.
However after two quick outs in the fourth inning, the Beavers put together a rally with a walk followed by four straight singles as Buena Vista plated three in the inning to extend its lead to 4-0.
The Beavers then added a run in fifth, sixth and seventh innings to make it 7-0. The lone CSS run came in the eighth when Colvard came home on a Buena Vista error to make the final score 7-1.
The Saints see their 20-game winning streak come to an end in the defeat. They also see their regional opener winning streak end, after winning that game each of the last two years.
Davis had only one strikeout in the loss, while allowing 11 hits. Jon Ringblom had 10 strikeouts in 7.2 innings in the victory. Colvard had two of CSS's four hits. The 15 hits allowed are the second-most this season (18 vs. UW-Whitewater).
