Box Score ST. PAUL, Minn. (csssaints.com) – Jordan Risse (Sioux Falls, S.D./Washington HS ) had a pair of RBIs and Andy Davis (Chippewa Falls, Wis./McDonell HS ) pitched five shutout innings as the St. Scholastica baseball team completed the season sweep of the Northwestern Eagles with a 4-0 victory on Wednesday morning.
The game got off to a quick start as leadoff hitter Austin Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) doubled to left, advancing to third on a Trevor Bernsdorf (Meadowlands, Minn./Floodwood HS (Doane) ) single. However, the St. Scholastica threat would be quickly negated as Bernsdorf would be thrown out at second on a fielders choice and Colvard would be thrown out at the plate attempting to score.
The game would remain scoreless until the third, as a Bernsdorf triple down the right field line and a Tyler Duex (Bloomer, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS (UW-Superior) ) walk gave the Saints runners on first and thrid with one out. Jordan Risse then knocked a single through the left side, scoring Bernsdorf and advancing Duex to second. The Eagles were able to limit the damage, however, as a fielder's choice and fly ball to center left two stranded for the Saints.
The Eagles mounted a threat against Davis in the fourth as a double to right and a fly ball to right gave Northwestern a runner on third with just one out. However, Davis would escape unscathed, as a fly ball to right and a called third strike left the Eagles empty-handed through four.
St. Scholastica tacked on another run in the fifth as Colvard walked to lead things off and advanced to second on a Bernsdorf single. After a double steal to put runners on second and third, Duex was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Risse flied out to center to bring in Colvard. The Saints would be unable to capitalize further, as a grounder to second and liner to first ended the CSS scoring chances, putting the score at 2-0. CSS would tack on a pair of insurance runs in the final two innings to put the score at the final of 4-0.
Andy Davis (Chippewa Falls, Wis./McDonell HS ) picked up his UMAC-best seventh win and added to his conference leading strikeout total, giving him 46 on the year. The win marks the eighth straight victory for the Saints (all of which were played on the road) and puts the Saints in sole possession of first place in the UMAC. The Saints return home to Wade Stadium for a pair of games against North Central this Friday and Saturday. Friday's contest starts at at 6 p.m. and Saturday's game begins at noon.
