Baseball Takes First Two from Northwestern

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ST. PAUL, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team swept the first two games of a three-game series against the University of Northwestern Tuesday afternoon taking game one 15-3 in seven innings and game two 9-1.
 
Game 1: CSS 15, Northwestern 3 (F/7)
After trailing 3-1 after three innings, the Saints scored seven runs in the fourth and added three more in the fifth to put the game out of reach.

The Saints got one run in the first off of a Tyler Duex (Bloomer, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS (UW-Superior) ) double that scored Trevor Bernsdorf (Meadowlands, Minn./Floodwood HS (Doane) ) making the score 1-0.

It was a big game for Duex and Bernsdorf as the pair went a combined 7-for-9 with five RBIs and six runs scored highlighted by a two-RBI double by Bernsdorf in the fifth inning for the Saints.

The Saints had five players account for RBIs in a big seven-run fourth inning.  Bret Moody (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) had an RBI single which cut the Eagles lead to 3-2. Then Austin Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) drove in two with a double which gave the Saints the lead for good.  That was then followed by a Northwestern error. Jordan Risse (Sioux Falls, S.D./Washington HS ) then hit a sacrifice fly that drove in the seventh CSS run of the game and Tyler Henderson (Chisago Lakes, Minn./Chisago Lakes HS) drove in the final run of the inning with an RBI groundout.

The Saints added three runs in the fifth and four in the seventh en route to a 12-run mercy-rule victory in game one over the Eagles.

On the mound, Risse went a strong six innings allowing just six hits with three earned runs and seven strikeouts to earn the win.
 
Game 2: CSS 9, Northwestern 1
Henderson led the way for the Saints going 4-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored as CSS took game two 9-1 to sweep the doubleheader.
 
The game was scoreless heading into the top of the third.  In the third, it was Bernsdorf and Duex again getting it going as the duo hit back-to-back sacrifice flies scoring Padraic Getchell (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS (North Dakota) ) and Colvard to make the score 2-0.  Henderson would then get his second hit of the ballgame, a single to center, scoring Risse for the third run of the game.
 
After Colvard singled home Getchell in the fourth, Northwestern would take advantage of a Saints error and cut the lead to three in the fifth inning 4-1.
 
The Saints answered right back in the sixth with two runs on RBIs by Colvard and Bernsdorf making the score 6-1 in favor of the Saints.
 
Bernsdorf would add another RBI in the eighth to make it 7-1. Brian Minks (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS ) and Colvard would follow suit in the ninth to set the final score at 9-1.
 
Colvard ended 3-for-6 in the game with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Bernsdorf would go 2-for-5 with three RBIs himself. Duex extended his hitting streak to 17 games.
 
Sean Imes (Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen HS ) got the start on the hill for the Saints going 4.2 innings allowing just one earned run on two hits while striking out three. Daniel Wood (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge HS ) and Kevin Kunik (Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS ) combined for 4.1 innings in relief combining for just two hits and no runs allowed in excellent relief work. Wood got credited with the win
 
The Saints (17-10 9-1 UMAC) will hope to finish their series with the Eagles tomorrow. The start time has been bumped up to 9 a.m. to try and avoid the rain. For any changes check csssaints.com in the morning. If the game is played, the action can be heard live on Saints Sports Net.
