Box Score MANKATO, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team used a six-run sixth inning to defeat the Vikings of Bethany Lutheran College 12-2 in seven innings Friday afternoon.
Andy Davis (Chippewa Falls, Wis./McDonell HS ) went six innings giving up the two runs for the Saints while allowing nine hits and striking out five.
Kevin Kunik (Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS ) finished off the game throwing a scoreless seventh inning with one strikeout.
The Saints scored in every inning except the first and the seventh with one in the second, third and fourth innings. They then went on to score three in the fifth and six in the sixth.
The three runs in the early innings for the Saints came off of singles by
Tyler Henderson (Chisago Lakes, Minn./Chisago Lakes HS) and
Tyler Duex (Bloomer, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS (UW-Superior) ) with
Brian Minks (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS ) adding a sacrifice fly to score
Parker Olson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Minn.-Duluth)) in the fourth.
The three-run fifth inning got kick started after an
Austin Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) groundout with back-to-back hits by
Trevor Bernsdorf (Meadowlands, Minn./Floodwood HS (Doane) ) and Duex. Then after
Jordan Risse (Sioux Falls, S.D./Washington HS ) was intentionally walked, Henderson continued his big day at the plate with another single that brought home Bernsdorf and Duex with Risse advancing to third on the play. Olson would then follow up the Henderson single with a single of his own completing the three-run inning and setting the score at 6-0 Saints.
The six-run sixth inning saw 11 Saints hitters with three hits, three walks, and two batters reach on a hit by pitch. The inning was highlighted by a
Padraic Getchell (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS (North Dakota) ) 2-RBI single that scored Minks and
Sam Christofferson (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS ) to make the score 12-0 Saints in front.
The Vikings scored their two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning with back-to-back two-out RBI singles off of Davis.
The Saints had many players have big days at the plate totaling 14 hits as a team. Henderson went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored, Duex went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, and Olson also went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Getchell went 2-for-4 on the day as well with two RBIs and 2 runs scored.
The Saints improved their record to 13-10 overall, while improving to 5-1 in UMAC play. They will take on the Vikings again in a doubleheader tomorrow with the first pitch scheduled for noon.
