ResultsDULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team won its ninth straight dual match with a 6-3 victory over Saint John's University Sunday at the Arrowhead Tennis Center.
The victory over the Johnnies is the second in program history with the first taking place during the 2003 season. Saint John's had won the last 10 meetings. The Saints improved their record to 13-3 this season. The all-time best start in program history is 14-3 in 2003.
CSS got off to a great start on Sunday, sweeping all three doubles matches. The No. 1 team of
Josh Stainer (Portsmouth, England/South Downs College) and
James Mack (Portsmouth, England/Cams Hill School) won 8-5. The No. 2 tandem of
Nick Lambrecht (Stacy, Minn./North Branch HS (Minn.-Duluth)) and
Cullen Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) won 8-2. Finally, the No. 3 team of
Logan Engelstad (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS) and
Jake Tideman (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) won 8-4. All three doubles teams have won at least four straight matches.
In singles play, Stainer won at the No. 1 spot 6-1, 6-3. Engelstad and
Mike Fontana (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (Gustavus Adolphus)) also cruised to straight set wins at the No. 4 and 5 spots. Engelstad won 6-1, 6-1 and Fontana 6-1, 6-3. For Fontana it was his eighth straight win, while Engelstad won his sixth straight.
The Saints will be at home again on Friday when they take part in another non-conference contest against the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
