PREVIEW: Men's Tennis With Two Contests this Weekend

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team will continue conference play on Saturday when it faces the University of Northwestern at the Lakeville Lifetime Fitness at 1 p.m. The Saints will then return home on Sunday and go out of conference to face Saint John's University at the Arrowhead Tennis Center at noon.

St. Scholastica Saints
Record:
 11-3 (2-0 UMAC)
Head Coach: Wells Patten
-The Saints will enter the weekend on a seven-match winning streak.
-CSS is off to an 11-3 start for the first time since the 2003 season.
-The Saints have won 116 consecutive UMAC dual matches.
-CSS is 58-26 in singles matches and 33-9 in doubles play. The Saints have shown depth with a 24-4 record at the No. 5 and 6 singles spots.
-Sophomore Mike Fontana (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (Gustavus Adolphus)) has won six straight singles matches and Logan Engelstad (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS) has won four straight matches.
-Josh Stainer (Portsmouth, England/South Downs College) is 6-6 at the No. 1 singles spot.
-Stainer and James Mack (Portsmouth, England/Cams Hill School) are 10-3 in doubles action this spring and have won four straight matches.
-The Saints were predicted to share the title with Northwestern, according to the preseason coaches' poll.

University of Northwestern Eagles
Record: 1-9 (0-0 UMAC)
Head Coach: Matt Swigart
-This will be the conference opener for the Eagles.
-Northwestern has been shut out in six of its nine losses.
-The Eagles are 11-49 this season in singles play and 5-25 in doubles action.
-Jimmy Ekman and Phil Gudim both lead the team with three singles wins. Both have also combined for a team-high three doubles wins.
-Against Hamline, Bethel and Concordia, the Eagles are 0-3, while the Saints are 2-1.
Series History: (CSS is 42-1 vs. Northwestern)
-The Saints have won 42 straight matches against the Eagles.
-CSS and Northwestern have met the past two seasons in the UMAC Championship.

Saint John's University Johnnies
Record: 4-5 (0-2 MIAC)
Head Coach: Jack Bowe
-The Johnnies have lost two straight entering this weekend, both in conference play.
-Three of the team's four wins came down in Florida, during its Spring Break trip.
-Saint John's is 28-26 in singles action and 14-13 in doubles play this season.
-Jack Hansen has five singles wins, including four at the No. 1 spot.
-Jordan Otto also has five singles victories.
-The No. 1 doubles team of Hansen and Andrew Nagel lead the Johnnies with four wins.
-Saint John's was picked to finish fifth in the MIAC this season, according to the preseason coaches' poll.
Series History: (CSS is 1-20 vs. Saint John's)
-CSS's lone win over the Johnnies came at home by a 5-4 score in 2003.
