Men's Tennis with Two Shutouts to Open UMAC Action

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team blanked both Bethany Lutheran College and North Central University to open Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action on Saturday.

A portion of the team faced Bethany Lutheran at the Swanson Tennis Center in St. Peter.

In doubles action, the No. 1 team of Josh Stainer (Portsmouth, England/South Downs College) and James Mack (Portsmouth, England/Cams Hill School) won 8-1. It was the fourth straight win for the team and their 10th of the season. The No. 2 duo of Jake Tideman (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and Cody Mauston (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) shut out their opponents 8-0. The No. 3 tandem of Dylan Kelly (Minneapolis, Minn./Minneapolis South HS) and Jordan Lindholm (Mt. Iron, Minn./Virginia HS) won 8-2.

CSS dropped just two games in all six singles matches. Stainer, Mack, Kelly and Matt Tellander (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS) all won by shutout. Tideman won 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 4 spot and Mauston won 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 5 spot.

Other members of the team took on North Central at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis.

The Saints won two matches by forfeit at the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles spots.

Cullen Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) and Nick Lambrecht (Stacy, Minn./North Branch HS (Minn.-Duluth)) at No. 1 doubles and Tyler Bates (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) and Logan Engelstad (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS) at No. 2 doubles had the other two wins.

In singles action, Lambrecht shut out his opponent at the No. 1 spot. At No. 2, Mike Fontana (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (Gustavus Adolphus)) came out on top 6-3, 6-0. Combs won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3.

Dan Mauro (Thunder Bay, Ontario/St. Ignatius HS) was victorious at No. 4 by scores of 6-1, 6-2. Zach Meikle (La Salle, Manitoba/Linden Christian School) won his first set 6-3 at No. 5, but the match did not finish. The Saints are on a seven-match win streak. The 11-3 start to the season matches the best in program history in 2003.

The Saints will play at the University of Northwestern next Saturday at the Baseline Tennis Center.
