ORLANDO, Fla. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team wrapped up its Spring Break action with a 5-0 record after a 5-4 victory over Ursinus College (Pa.) Tuesday night.

CSS 7, Illinois Wesleyan 2
The Saints began the day with a 7-2 victory over Illinois Wesleyan University. It was the first win against the Titans in program history as they have been defeated the past two seasons.

The Saints took two of the three doubles matches. The No. 1 team of Josh Stainer (Portsmouth, England/South Downs College) and James Mack (Portsmouth, England/Cams Hill School) won 8-3. The No. 3 tandem of Logan Engelstad (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS) and Jake Tideman (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) also were victorious 8-1.

In singles play, Stainer won at the No. 1 spot when his opponent had to retire deep into the first set. Nick Lambrecht (Stacy, Minn./North Branch HS (Minn.-Duluth)) won at the No. 3 spot 6-4, 6-1. Alex Mihailov (Bucharest, Romania/Gheorghe Sincai National College) improved to 10-1 on the year with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the No. 4 spot. It was his sixth straight win.

Engelstad had no trouble at the No. 5 position, winning by scores of 6-1, 6-1. The final winner was Mike Fontana (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (Gustavus Adolphus)) at the No. 6 spot by scores of 6-3, 6-1.

CSS 5, Ursinus 4
In the nightcap, the Saints squeaked out a 5-4 win over previously unbeaten Ursinus.

CSS recorded a pivotal sweep in the doubles matches. The No. 1 team of Stainer and Mack had the tightest match at 9-7. The No. 2 team of Lambrecht and Cullen Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) had an equally close match with an 8-6 win. The No. 3 team of Engelstad and Tideman cruised to an 8-2 victory. Engelstad and Tideman have won five straight matches as a team.

Those three doubles wins were important as the Bears won the top four singles flights. Engelstad picked a victory at the No. 5 singles spot by scores of 6-1, 6-3. The final CSS winner, which ended up deciding the dual, was Fontana at the No. 6 spot 6-2, 6-4. Fontana has won five straight matches.

The 9-3 start of the season for the Saints is the best since the 2003 season when the team started 11-3.

The Saints return to Minnesota and will open Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play on Saturday, March 22nd against both Bethany Lutheran College and North Central University.
