Baseball Takes Down Keystone in Extras Again

| By:
Box Score FT. PIERCE, Fla. (csssaints.com) – Shayne Ciernia (Eagan, Minn./Breck HS )'s RBI single in the top of the 10th was the game-winner as the St. Scholastica baseball team defeated Keystone College (Pa.) for a third time in the last two days with a 6-5 victory.

For the second straight day, the Saints would have to rally to force extras. The Giants struck first in the bottom of the third, scoring a pair of unearned runs. CSS got one of those runs back in the fourth as Padraic Getchell (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS (North Dakota) ) drew a bases loaded walk. However, the Saints would strand the bases loaded.

St. Scholastica tied the contest at 2-2 in the top of the fifth when Jordan Risse (Sioux Falls, S.D./Washington HS ) scored on a Keystone error. The Saints then took their first lead in the sixth as Getchell led the inning with a double and later scored on a Tyler Duex (Bloomer, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS (UW-Superior) ) sacrifice fly.

The Giants regained the lead in the bottom frame with a pair of runs to make it 4-3. A Risse sacrifice fly scored Getchell in the eighth to tie the game at 4-4. However, once again Keystone re-took the lead with a sacrifice fly of its own in the bottom of the eighth. Logan Hulst (Roseau, Minn./Roseau HS) would keep it a one-run game by getting out of a bases loaded jam.

In the top of the ninth, Tyler Henderson (Chisago Lakes, Minn./Chisago Lakes HS) was hit by a pitch to begin the frame. Al Marolt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) pinch ran for Henderson and was moved over on a Mike Policano (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS ) sacrifice. After a passed ball moved Marolt to third, freshman Trevor Bernsdorf (Meadowlands, Minn./Floodwood HS (Doane) ) got Marolt across the plate to tie the game at 5-5.

The Giants went down in order in the bottom of the ninth and the teams went to extra innings for the second straight game.

In the 10th, Duex reached on an error and then later stole third. Shayne Ciernia (Eagan, Minn./Breck HS ) then delivered a RBI single to left, scoring Duex, giving the Saints a 6-5 lead. CSS career saves leader Thomas Rogers (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet HS ) entered the game in the bottom of the 10th and recorded three strikeouts to seal the 6-5 win.

Hulst picked up his first collegiate win, not allowing a hit in 1.1 innings. Mickie Keuning (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Angelo State)) started for the Saints and struck out five in five innings in the no decision. Ciernia and Bernsdorf each had a pair of hits to lead the CSS offense.

The Saints (4-3) will have the next couple of days off and will be in action again on Thursday when they play Hilbert College (N.Y.) in one, nine-inning game at 12 p.m. Eastern Time. The game can be heard live on Saints Sports Net.
