ORLANDO, Fla. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team defeated both Monmouth College (Ill.) and Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) on Monday.
CSS 6, Monmouth 3
The Saints began the day, defeating Monmouth College (Ill.) 6-3.
On the doubles side,
Logan Engelstad (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS) and
Jake Tideman (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) started the Saints off with an 8-0 win over Marco Franco and Alex King at No. 3.
The No. 2 doubles team of
Nick Lambrecht (Stacy, Minn./North Branch HS (Minn.-Duluth)) and
Cullen Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) defeated Chris Franco and Derek Rineberg, 8-5.
On the singles side, the Saints kept the lead. In the No. 1 spot
Josh Stainer (Portsmouth, England/South Downs College) defeated C. Franco 6-2, 6-2.
Alex Mihailov (Bucharest, Romania/Gheorghe Sincai National College) beat M. Franco 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 5 spot.
Mike Fontana (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (Gustavus Adolphus)) defeated Andrew Shiakallis 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 6 spot. The No. 4 match between Engelstad and Rineberg was pushed to a super breaker. Engelstad won 3-6, 6-2, (10-6) to give the Saints a 6-3 dual win over Monmouth.
CSS 9, Saint Ambrose 0
In the nightcap, the Saints defeated Saint Ambrose 9-0. CSS won each singles match in straight sets.
In doubles play, the No. 1 tandem of
Josh Stainer (Portsmouth, England/South Downs College) and
James Mack (Portsmouth, England/Cams Hill School), along with the No. 2 team of
Cullen Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) and
Cody Mauston (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS), each won 8-2. The No. 3 team of
Jordan Lindholm (Mt. Iron, Minn./Virginia HS) and
Dan Mauro (Thunder Bay, Ontario/St. Ignatius HS) won 8-4.
In singles action, Stainer won 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot. Lambrecht was victorious at No. 2 by scores of 6-3, 6-0. Mihailov came out on top 6-1, 6-2.
Mike Fontana (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (Gustavus Adolphus)) at the No. 4 spot and
Tyler Bates (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) at the No. 5 spot both won by scores of 6-1, 6-0. The final winner was
Matt Tellander (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS) at the No. 6 spot 6-3, 6-1.
The Saints (7-3) will play Illinois Wesleyan University and Ursinus College (Pa.) tomorrow. The Illinois Wesleyan match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. Eastern time.
