Saints Sweep Ripon, Upend Carleton

VIRGINIA, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team swept Ripon College (Wis.) and edged ahead to defeat Carleton College on Sunday at Quad City Tennis.

CSS vs. Ripon
The Saints began the day with a 9-0 victory over the Red Hawks. Ripon is coached by former Saint and Hermantown native Brian Lindberg.

The Saints pushed full steam ahead against the Red Hawks, with the doubles only allowing six games to Ripon.  The No. 1 team of Josh Stainer (Portsmouth, England/South Downs College) and James Mack (Portsmouth, England/Cams Hill School) won 8-5. The No. 2 team of Logan Engelstad (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS) and Jake Tideman (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) came out on top 8-1 and the No. 3 duo of Jordan Lindholm (Mt. Iron, Minn./Virginia HS) and Cody Mauston (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) blanked their opponents 8-0.

The singles followed suit and only game up eight games. Alex Mihailov (Bucharest, Romania/Gheorghe Sincai National College), Tideman and Tyler Bates (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) all shot out their opponents. Nick Lambrecht (Stacy, Minn./North Branch HS (Minn.-Duluth)) played at the No. 1 spot and won 6-1, 6-4.Engelstad won at No. 2 and Dylan Kelly (Minneapolis, Minn./Minneapolis South HS) was victorious at No. 4.

CSS vs. Carleton
The Saints ended with a tight 5-4 victory over Carleton. The Knights also blanked Ripon prior to going up against the Saints and are ranked 10th in the Central Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

The Saints jumped ahead after sweeping the doubles competition. Stainer and Mack at No. 1 and Engelstad and Tideman at No. 3 both won 8-6. The No. 2 team of Cullen Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) and Lambrecht won 8-5. However, that lead didn't last long during the singles matches.

Engelstad cruised to victory at the No. 3 spot to put the Saints ahead 4-0, but the following four matches all went to the Knights.

Tied at four matches each, the deciding match came down to a super tie-breaker in the No. 6 spot. CSS's Mihailov and Carleton's Ben Huang split the first two sets with Huang taking the first 6-3 and Mihailov the second 6-1. With momentum on his side, Mihailov came out on top 10-3 in the super-breaker to lead the Saints to a 5-4 victory over the Knights.

The victory snaps a four-match losing streak to Carleton.

Up next, the Saints (3-1) will head to St. Peter, Minn. to take on the Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday.
