Box Score ASHLAND, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team shot 56 percent for the game and never trailed after the first five minutes as it defeated Northland College 72-55 Tuesday night.
The lead changed hands through the first five-plus minutes of the contest, but the Saints used a 7-0 run to take control and lead 16-10 with 13 minutes left in the half. Later in the half, the Saints went on a 15-3 run to extend their lead to 35-15 with three minutes to go. The LumberJacks would cut it to 13 as the teams went into the locker room with score 35-22 CSS.
The Saints shot 46 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes, while Northland was held to 30 percent shooting. Second-chance points were the story of the first half as the Saints out-scored the Jacks 20-4 in that area. CSS had 10 offensive rebounds and nine defensive rebounds in the half.
St. Scholastica really shot well in the second half at 67 percent (16-for-24). The Jacks went on a 10-2 run within the first five minutes of the half to cut the CSS lead to seven. However, back-to-back dunks by
Andrew Laughlin (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) spurred an 11-1 run to lift the margin back to 17.
After Northland cut it to 10, the Saints scored 10 straight points, which included a
Mike Spoden (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids HS) dunk for CSS's biggest lead of the game at 63-43. The Saints cruised to victory 72-55.
St. Scholastica finished with a shooting percentage of .558, including 7-for-13 from beyond the arc. CSS out-scored the Jacks 38-10 in the paint. The LumberJacks shot 34 percent for the game and made 10 3-pointers.
Jake Naslund (Barnum, Minn./Barnum HS) led the Saints with 17 points and was 3-for-3 from 3-point land.
Trevor Morlock (Rogers, Minn./Rogers HS (Minn., Crookston)) added 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
LaMonte Hall (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle HS (Saint Mary’s)) had 11 points off the bench. Zach Ringhouse had 19 points to pace Northland (3-15, 1-7 UMAC).
The Saints (7-12, 4-4 UMAC) will be at Bethany Lutheran College on Friday and Martin Luther College on Saturday. Friday's game in Mankato is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
