DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – In its home opener, the St. Scholastica men's tennis team defeated Concordia College-Moorhead 9-0 Sunday afternoon at the Arrowhead Tennis Center.
In doubles action, the No. 1 team of
Josh Stainer (Portsmouth, England/South Downs College) and
James Mack (Portsmouth, England/Cams Hill School), along with the No. 2 team of
Cullen Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) and
Nick Lambrecht (Stacy, Minn./North Branch HS (Minn.-Duluth)) separated themselves from their competition late in the match as both teams won 8-5. The No. 3 tandem of
Tyler Bates (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) and
Dylan Kelly (Minneapolis, Minn./Minneapolis South HS) prevailed 8-6.
Stainer had very little trouble at the No. 1 singles spot, winning 6-1, 6-1.
Mike Fontana (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (Gustavus Adolphus)) cruised at the No. 6 spot 6-1, 6-0.
Alex Mihailov (Bucharest, Romania/Gheorghe Sincai National College) came out on top at No. 5 by scores of 6-4, 6-2.
Logan Engelstad (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS) shut out his opponent in the first set at No. 3, but had to battle to close the match in the second set, winning 6-0, 7-6 (8-6). Lambrecht was in a tight match at No. 2, but came out victorious 6-4, 7-5. The final singles winner was Mack at No. 4 by scores of 7-5, 6-0.
The Saints (4-2) will be in action in Rochester next Sunday when they face the University of Wisconsin-la Crosse. That match is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
