It Comes Down to Saturday

Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team fell to Marian University (Wis.)Friday night 3-1 on a night that saw Sabre goalie Josh Baker record 33 saves.

With the loss, tomorrow's regular season finale will determine who gets home ice for next weekend's Harris Cup Quarterfinals. The Saints are now tied with Marian for fourth, but both teams set only a point back of Lake Forest College (Ill.) for third. Lake Forest plays Adrian tomorrow.

The Sabres got on the board early in this game on an Rjay Berra goal just 2:30 into the game with Adam Ritche and Brett Campbell accounting for the assists.

The 1-0 score would hold all the way through the second period and early into the third until Steven Phee (Balzac, Alberta/George McDougall HS (Canmore-AJHL) ) tied the game up at 1 apiece on passes from the Nowakowski tandem with Dylan Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial HS (Brooks-AJHL) ) accounting for the primary assist and Brandon Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Central Memorial HS (Calgary Royals-AJHL)) getting the secondary.

The momentum would not stay in the Saints favor for long when with 10:03 left in the game Aaron Leonard put the puck past Saints goalie Tyler Bruggeman (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Austin-NAHL) ) to put the Sabres ahead at 2-1.

Marian would add one more goal as Matt Williams put another one past Bruggeman with 8:25 to go in the game to take a two goal lead at 3-1.  That score would remain as Marian took the victory over the Saints 3-1. It was the seventh straight win for the Sabres.

The Saints appeared to score a last second goal to make the score 3-2, but it was simultaneous with the final horn and the goal was waived.

Bruggeman finished the game with 28 saves, while Baker finished with 33 for the Sabes. Both teams were 0-for-5 on the power-play.

The Saints (12-8-4, 9-5-3 NCHA) will play their regular season finale tomorrow night at 5 p.m. as they host Marian once again with home ice on the line.  It will also be Senior Night, as the Saints will recognize their eight seniors.  Come cheer on the Saints or catch it live at Saints Sports Net.
