Slow Start, Hot Shooting Curtail Saints

Box Score MORRIS, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St Scholastica men's basketball team could not recover from a slow start and the University of Minnesota Morris made 13, 3-pointers as the Cougars defeated the Saints 77-64 Friday evening in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play.

The Saints started off the game struggling to get a shot to fall and gave Morris a 13-0 lead.  At the 16:14 mark.  Trevor Morlock (Rogers, Minn./Rogers HS (Minn., Crookston)) made a layup to start the Saints off, but they didn't score again until the 12:58 marker. 

The Cougars kept the lead for the rest of the first half as the Saints fought to close the gap.  The half ended with the Cougars up 36-26.

Morlock had seven points and Jake Naslund (Barnum, Minn./Barnum HS) added six for the half for the Saints. Morris was led by RJ Dean with 10 points and he was followed by Brendon Foss with seven.

Four minutes into the second half, CSS cut the Cougar lead to five at 41-36. However, Morris connected on five 3-pointers in the next four minutes to extend the lead back to 18. The Cougars went on to win 77-64.

For the eighth time this season, Morlock was the Saints' top scorer with 13 points. As the conference's top rebounder, he led the team with nine rebounds. Naslund also ended with 13 points for the game.  11 different CSS players found the scoring column. The Saints biggest struggle was to make shots and ended with a 38.7 field goal percentage.

RJ Dean led the scoring for the Cougars with 19 points and was followed by Cody Emerick with 13 points.  Morris (7-6, 1-1 UMAC) shot 57 percent from the floor and was 13-of-22 from beyond the arc.

The Saints (4-9, 1-1 UMAC) will head to St. Bonifacius tomorrow to face Crown College, who is 2-0 in the conference play. Tip time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
