MINNEAPOLIS (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team swept North Central University 9-0 Friday night in an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament semifinal at the Baseline Tennis Center.
The win also gave head coach
Wells Patten his 200th directing the men's team at The College of St. Scholastica.
The Saints dropped just one game in doubles action. The No. 1 team of
Josh Stainer (Portsmouth, England/South Downs College) and
Cullen Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) won 8-0. That was the same score by the No. 3 team of
Tyler Bates (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) and
Cody Mauston (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS). The No. 2 tandem of
James Mack (Portsmouth, England/Cams Hill School) and
Nick Lambrecht (Stacy, Minn./North Branch HS (Minn.-Duluth)) won 8-1.
In singles play, Stainer won at the No. 1 spot 6-0, 6-2. That was the same score for Mack at the No. 2 spot. Lambrecht shut out his opponents 6-0, 6-0.
Mike Fontana (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (Gustavus Adolphus)) won 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 4 spot. For Fontana, that was his 11th straight singles win. Combs shut out his opponent 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5 spot and
Alex Nagle (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 for the final winner of the night.
The Saints (19-8) will play Northwestern College in the championship tomorrow at 11 a.m.
