PREVIEW: Baseball Games Moved to Freeport this Weekend

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team looks to close out the regular season undefeated in UMAC play this weekend as it faces North Central University and Bethany Lutheran College for a pair of doubleheaders in Freeport, Minn.

*The games will be played at Black Sox Park in Freeport, which is right off I-94, 30 minutes west of St. Cloud.

About the Saints
Record: 20-9, 10-0 UMAC

  • The Saints are coming off a pair of losses to fourth ranked UW-Whitewater on Wednesday night. CSS lost the first game 15-5 and the second by a score of 5-3.
  • The Saints have dominated UMAC competition thus far this season. CSS has a team batting average of .390 in conference play and have not lost to a UMAC team this season.
  • Kyle Flagstad (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) leads the UMAC with 29 RBIs and 12 stolen bases. He is tied for first with two home runs and is also tied for third with a .380 batting average.
  • Austin Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) is third on the team with 17 runs scored. His .416 batting average and 47 hits are currently tops in the UMAC.
  • Jake Casareto (International Falls, Minn./Falls HS)  is second in the UMAC with 25 RBIs and is also tied for the UMAC lead with two home runs.
  • The Saints pitching staff has been solid so far this season. Mickie Keuning (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Angelo State)), Kyle Jensen (Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake HS) and Matthew Swenson are in the top five in the UMAC as they all have ERAs under 2.00. Thomas Rogers (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet HS ) also leads the UMAC with six saves.
  • Jensen was also named UMAC Pitcher of the Week after his win over the University of Minnesota Morris on Saturday. Jensen struck out a career-high 12 Cougars in the win and had a perfect game going with two outs in the seventh before it was broken up. Jensen is also second in the UMAC with 35 Ks.
  • The sixth inning has been the telltale sign for the Saints so far this season. CSS is 19-0 in games when they are leading after six innings. However, the Saints are 0-7 when trailing after six.

About the Rams
Record: 1-18, 1-7 UMAC

  • NCU has struggled this season, tallying just one win against Crown College on the 26th of April. The Rams are currently on a four-game slide and have been outscored 62-7 in those games.
  • Gary Ramos has been solid this season for the Rams, leading the team with a healthy .350 average, 14 RBIs and three stolen bases. He also leads the team with 19 strikeouts.
  • The Rams have struggled mightily on the mound this season. The lowest ERA on the team is 7.84.
  • NCU has also had trouble at the plate this season, with a team batting average of .200 and an OBP of just .270.
  • The Rams have a doubleheader against Minnesota Morris today before traveling to take on the Saints this Friday.

Series History: (CSS is 2-0 vs. North Central)
  • The only meetings between the two programs took place in 2002 with the Saints sweeping a doubleheader.

About the Vikings
Record: 12-10, 8-0 UMAC

  • After a tough non-conference season, the Vikings have come out strong in conference play. Bethany Lutheran is currently riding an eight-game winning streak and is the only other team in the UMAC with a perfect conference record.
  • Dylan Gass has been solid for the Vikings this season. He is currently hitting .333 and is fourth in the UMAC with 19 RBIs.
  • The Vikings have eight players with at least one home run, and lead the UMAC with 11 as a team. Cory Ferm, Mitch Kleist and Mitch Sellers are all tied for the UMAC lead with two.
  • Bethany Lutheran has been solid at the plate this season, hitting .304 collectively and racking up 67 doubles on the season.
  • The Viking pitching staff has also been solid in conference play as well, with an ERA of 1.50 in UMAC play. Conference opponents have hit just .175 so far.
  • Bethany Lutheran has a doubleheader with Northwestern tomorrow before traveling to face CSS.

  • The Saints have won the past seven meetings against the Vikings, outscoring them 56-30 in those contests.
