Saints Struggle Offensively in Loss to Case Western

Box Score WHITEWATER, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team had just six hits and had runners reach third base just twice in a 3-1 loss to Case Western Reserve University (Ohio) on Thursday at the Whitewater Regional of the NCAA Division III Tournament at Prucha Field.

The Spartans (28-13) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as the leadoff batter walked and that was followed with a double. The leadoff batter would eventually score on a groundout later in the inning.

CSS would get a runner on third with two outs in the third, but a comebacker to pitcher ended the threat. Case Western added a second run in the fourth inning as a two-out double was just off the glove of a diving Austin Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) that allowed a run to score.

The Saints finally got on the board in the sixth as Kyle Flagstad (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) scored on a fielder's choice to make it 2-1. However, the Spartans got that run back in the seventh with another two-out hit on a ground ball deep in the hole at shortstop and CSS could not get the force out at second.

The Spartans would threaten more in the eighth and ninth, but Flagstad threw out a runner at the plate in the eighth and Case stranded two in the ninth. The Saints on the other hand went down in order in both the eighth and ninth as Case Western survived to play another day with a 3-1 victory.

Andy Davis (Chippewa Falls, Wis./McDonell HS ) picked up the loss for the Saints allowing four hits and four walks, while striking out one in 6.2 innings. Jamie Hora picked up the complete game victory for the Spartans, striking out three. Flagstad and Jake Casareto (International Falls, Minn./Falls HS) had two hits apiece to lead the CSS offense

The Saints (28-10) will now play the loser of tonight's game between UW-Whitewater and UW-Stevens Point. CSS will play at noon tomorrow. If they win that game, they will play again at 6 p.m. tomorrow. All of the action can be heard live on Saints Sports Net.
