Men’s Tennis Sweeps Knights and Rams

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team swept Martin Luther College and North Central University as both groups came out with 9-0 victories on Saturday.

The Saints faced Martin Luther College on Saturday morning. Mike Fontana (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (Gustavus Adolphus)) sparked the singles play and was followed by wins from Guthrie Coughlin (Staples, Minn./Staples-Motley HS), Tyler Bates (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech), Cody Mauston (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS), Alex Nagle (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) and Wells Brose (Mound, Minn./Mound Westonka HS).

Doubles action also saw CSS on top, with the No. 1 pair of Fontana/Bates winning their match 8-2, No. 2 duo of Coughlin/Mauston sweeping 8-0, and No. 3 matchup featuring Brose and Nagle coming away victorious with a score of 8-1.

The Knights fall to 1-1 in both UMAC and overall play with the loss.

CSS then faced North Central University on Saturday night, again not dropping a match. Singles play saw Fontana and Nagle pick up their second win of the day, alongside victories from Nick Lambrecht (Stacy, Minn./North Branch HS (Minn.-Duluth)), Kolin Dean (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander HS), Cullen Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS), and Dan Mauro (Thunder Bay, Ontario/St. Ignatius HS).

Following the same rhythm, No. 1 duo featuring Combs and Josh Stainer (Portsmouth, England/South Downs College), No. 2 team of Fontana and Bates, and No. 3 pairing of Brose and Mike Aro (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) all swept their matches 8-0 in doubles play.

The Saints, now 13-7 overall and 5-0 in UMAC play, look to stay undefeated in the UMAC when they travel to face the University of Minnesota Morris on Sunday at Gold's Gym in St. Cloud.
