DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team played a pair of matches in two different states on Friday night with one group defeating Bethany Lutheran College 9-0 in conference play and the other group falling to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire 8-1.

One portion of the team faced Bethany Lutheran (0-11, 0-4 UMAC) in a conference match at the Swanson Tennis Center in St. Peter.

The Saints did not drop a game in doubles play as the No. 1 team of Mike Fontana (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (Gustavus Adolphus)) and Tyler Bates (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech), the No. 2 team of Guthrie Coughlin (Staples, Minn./Staples-Motley HS) and Cody Mauston (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) and the No. 3 duo of Mike Aro (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) and Jordan Lindholm (Mt. Iron, Minn./Virginia HS) all won 8-0.

Fontana at No. 1 singles and Matt Tellander (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS) at No. 6 singles both shut out their opponents 6-0, 6-0. For Tellander it was his first collegiate win. Bates at No. 3 and Dan Mauro (Thunder Bay, Ontario/St. Ignatius HS) at No. 5 both won 6-1, 6-0. Alex Nagle (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) topped his opponent at the No. 4 spot 6-0, 6-1. The final winner was Coughlin at the No. 2 spot by scores of 6-2, 6-1.

The other portion of the team played a non-conference match at UW-Eau Claire (13-5). The lone winner for the Saints in that match was Cullen Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) at No. 4 singles by a score of 8-1.

The Saints (11-7, 3-0 UMAC) will play both Martin Luther College and North Central University tomorrow. The Martin Luther match is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. in New Ulm, while the North Central match will begin at 7 p.m. at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
