Saints Begin UMAC Play with Sweep of Eagles

(csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team overcame 2-0 deficit in the first game of a doubleheader against the Northwestern College Eagles to win 5-2 and then shutout the Eagles in game two by a score 3-0 in a snowy Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) matchup Friday afternoon.

In the first game of the doubleheader, the Saints found themselves down 2-0 after the second inning as the Eagles brought in a pair of runners off of a fielder's choice and a RBI double. 

CSS would get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning as Parker Olson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Minn.-Duluth)) drove in Austin Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) to make the game 2-1 after four innings of play.

The Saints would tie the game up in the sixth as Kyle Flagstad (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) would score Jesse Heaton (Heyworth, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic HS ) via a RBI single. 

CSS would tack on two more runs in the following inning as Jordan O'Neill (Blaine, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) would ground-rule double to score David Vogelgesang (Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS).  Heaton would single later in the inning to score Jake Kuschke (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS ) from third base to make the lead 4-2 in favor of the Saints.
O'Neill would get an RBI after being hit by a pitch scoring Flagstad from third.  The Saints would win game one by a score 5-2.

The Saints offense generated seven hits while taking one walk.  The Saints were hit by pitch five times in the contest.  Each team committed one error in the game.

Andy Davis (Chippewa Falls, Wis./McDonell HS ) pitched four innings to start the game for the Saints, allowing six hits and two runs.  Michael Swenson (Scandia, Minn./Forest Lake HS) picked up the win for the Saints pitching four innings as well allowing only one hit while striking out three batters.  Thomas Rogers (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet HS ) earned the save, his sixth of the season, for the Saints.

In game two, the Saints' bats started out hot as Flagstad would double to left center field to score Colvard to take a 1-0 lead.  On the next at-bat, Jake Casareto (International Falls, Minn./Falls HS) would reach on a fielder's choice to advance Flagstad to third base.  The next plate appearance saw Casareto advanced to second as Flagstad stole home to put the Saints up 2-0.

CSS would add an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth as Flagstad would score on a wild pitch.  The Saints would sweep the doubleheader winning game two by a score of 3-0.

The Saints would earn 11 hits in the game, two apiece by Flagstad and Casareto.  Kyle Jensen (Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake HS) pitched eight solid innings, scattering six hits en route to his second win of the season.  Mickie Keuning (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Angelo State)) earned the save, striking out 2-of-3 batters in the ninth inning.

Northwestern (5-12, 0-1 UMAC) would commit one error in the game.
