Baseball Cruises in Doubleheader over Northland

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ASHLAND, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team had a successful road trip as it swept Northland College Tuesday afternoon, winning game one 23-3 and game two 17-3 to extend its winning streak to eight and remain undefeated in conference play.

In the first game, the Saints scored 12 runs in the first two innings to cruise to the easy 23-3 victory. Kyle Flagstad (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) went 4-for-5 with two homers and had seven RBIs in the win.

Seven Saints had two or more hits as CSS had 41 plate appearances and 22 hits in just seven innings. Flagstad, Austin Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS), Kyle Jensen (Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake HS) and Padraic Getchell (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS (North Dakota) ) all crossed the plate at least three times in the contest, and nine players scored at least one run. The Saints tallied seven doubles and hit four homers in the contest.

The CSS pitching staff scattered 10 hits and allowed just two walks on the day. Michael Swenson (Scandia, Minn./Forest Lake HS) was credited with the win, his fifth of the season, as he allowed just one run in six strong innings.

St. Scholastica did not let up in game two. The Saints were up 9-1 after three innings as they scored four in the second and five more in the third. CSS wound up scoring another eight runs in the game to bring their score to 17.

Andy Schwantes (Lakeville, Minn./Apple Valley HS (Minn.-Duluth)) and Getchell led the way for the CSS offense in game two. Both had three hits and two RBIs in the contest and had three doubles between the two. Four other Saints, Colvard, Jensen, Jordan O'Neill (Blaine, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) and Shayne Ciernia (Eagan, Minn./Breck HS ) also had two RBIs apiece in the contest.

Mickie Keuning (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Angelo State)) was the winning pitcher for CSS in the second contest, going five innings and allowing just one earned run on four hits. Josh Brodersen (Vulcan, Mich./Norway HS ) finished up the last two innings, allowing two runs on four hits.

The Saints scored a remarkable 40 runs in two games, and racked up 40 hits as well. CSS had five home runs and 15 doubles in just 13 innings on the afternoon. The Saints have scored at least 10 runs in each of the last eight games.

The Saints (20-7, 10-0 UMAC) look to keep their winning streak alive as they have a crucial regional doubleheader at fourth-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater tomorrow beginning at 4 p.m.
