Baseball Thwarts Crown in Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MINNETRISTA, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team swept Crown College Sunday afternoon at Westonka Recreation Park, winning game one 20-0 and game two 16-3, both in seven innings.

After scoring four runs in each of the first two innings and getting one more in the fourth, the Saints exploded for 11 in the fifth to give the Saints the 20-0 game one victory.

The CSS pitching staff allowed just four Crown hits and did not walk anybody in seven innings. Joel Wuorio (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors HS) picked up the victory, going three innings. Daniel Wood (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge HS ), A.J. Nelson, Aaron Nissen (Blackduck, Minn./Blackduck HS ) and Ben Lindquist (Detroit Lakes, Minn./Detroit Lakes HS ) combined to allow just one hit and struck out four.

Austin Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS), Kyle Flagstad (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS), Jake Casareto (International Falls, Minn./Falls HS), Andy Schwantes (Lakeville, Minn./Apple Valley HS (Minn.-Duluth)) and Mike Policano (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS ) all recorded two hits. Casareto led the way driving in three runs. Nine different Saints recorded RBIs.

St. Scholastica kept it rolling in the game two. The Saints were up 3-0 after two when they plated seven runs in the third. CSS wound up scoring four more runs to complete the sweep with a 16-3 victory.

Colvard led the offense by going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Jordan O'Neill (Blaine, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) and Sam Christofferson (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS ) also had two hits each for the Saints. 11 different Saints registered RBIs in the game two win.

In his first appearance on a mound since last year's injury, David Vogelgesang (Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) earned his first win of the season, going three innings, striking out two and giving up three hits. Alex Trierweiler (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall ), Josh Brodersen (Vulcan, Mich./Norway HS ) and Jake Snyder (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) pitched the final four innings. 

The Saints (18-7, 8-0 UMAC) are scheduled to play Northland College in a doubleheader on Tuesday in Ashland. That doubleheader is scheduled for noon. Keep checking csssaints.com for any time and location changes of that doubleheader.
