Box Score 2 MORRIS, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team was victorious in both games of their doubleheader, topping the University of Minnesota Morris 10-0 in the first contest and taming the Cougars again by a score of 14-6 in the final game on Saturday afternoon.
The first game was all Saints, as they led from start-to-finish. In the first,
Jake Casareto (International Falls, Minn./Falls HS) singled to bring in
Kyle Flagstad (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS), giving CSS an early 1-0 lead.
That run would prove to be all the Saints would need, but CSS would go on to score another two runs in the second.
Tyler Henderson (Chisago Lakes, Minn./Chisago Lakes HS) was hit by a pitch to start the inning and advanced to second on a throwing error.
Andy Schwantes (Lakeville, Minn./Apple Valley HS (Minn.-Duluth)) and
Jordan O'Neill (Blaine, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) walked to load the bases, and
Austin Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) reached on an error, scoring Henderson.
Padraic Getchell (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS (North Dakota) ) would also walk, scoring Schwantes and giving the Saints a 3-0 lead.
CSS would extend their lead in the fifth and sixth. A
Parker Olson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Minn.-Duluth)) single to right center scored Casareto. In the sixth, Casareto would hit a sacrifice fly to left to score O'Neill and advance the runners, and Olson would single to score Colvard and increase the lead to 7-0.
For good measure, the Saints would add three more runs in the final two innings to bring the final to 10-0. The Cougars only mustered one hit off of
Kyle Jensen (Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake HS), who went seven strong innings, fanning a career-high 12. The loss was credited to Morris' Jim Paskett, who went seven and one third innings, giving up eleven hits and nine earned runs.
The second game, however, had a much different storyline, as the Cougars jumped out to an early 4-0 lead through two innings. In the first, Morris utilized a bit of small ball and took advantage of CSS fielding errors to score three unearned runs.
Morris would extend its lead in the second as Neil Arvold walked to start the inning, advancing to second on a wild pitch. Dalton Degraffenreid then reached on a bunt single to third, advancing Arvold. Arvold then scored two batters later as Jake Schmitz grounded out to second, giving the Cougars a 4-0 lead.
The Saints responded in the third, scoring six runs to gain the lead for good. O'Neill scored on a wild pitch to begin. Then Flagstad knocked in Colvard with a sacrifice fly to bring the score to 4-2. Casareto singled up the middle, scoring Jensen. Next, Olson singled up the middle, advancing Casareto to second, and the pair moved up a bag on a wild pitch. However, the extra bag was not needed as Schwantes tripled down the left field line to score the pair and give the Saints a 5-4 lead. Schwantes later scored on a throwing error by the catcher to put the score at 6-4.
Morris would cut the lead in half in the fourth as Kyle Grote doubled to left field, and a sacrifice bunt by Arvold advanced Grote to third. Grote would later score as Degraffenreid laid down a squeeze bunt for his second bunt single of the day, bringing the score to 6-5.
CSS would promptly rebuild their lead in the fifth as
Jake Kuschke (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS ) singled to right field, bringing in two runs, giving the Saints a three run lead.
Morris would score again in the fifth as Schmitz singled to right to start the inning. CSS retired the next two batters, but a Hodson walk advanced Schmitz to second. Then the fourth Saints error of the day allowed Korlath to reach, scoring Schmitz and bringing the score to 8-6. The run was also the fourth unearned run the Cougars scored on the day, and the last that Morris would score on the afternoon.
The Saints would again respond in the sixth, as an O'Neill walk, Colvard single and a Jensen walk would quickly load the bases. Flagstad then grounded into a fielder's choice, and O'Neill was thrown out at the plate. However, Casareto doubled down the left field line, scoring Colvard and Jensen and advancing Flagstad to third. Olson knocked in Flagstad with a grounder to second, and Casareto would later score from third on a wild pitch to give the Saints a 12-6 lead. However, the Saints added another run in the seventh and another in the eighth to bring the final to 14-6 in favor of CSS.
Andy Davis (Chippewa Falls, Wis./McDonell HS ) picked up the win for the Saints, going six strong innings and giving up just two earned runs. The loss was credited to Calvin Bowes, who went just two and one-third innings, giving up five earned runs on five hits.
The Saints (16-7, 6-0 UMAC) look to extend their four-game winning streak and remain perfect in the UMAC tomorrow as they take on Crown College. The game will be played in Minnetrista, Minn.
