Box Score 2 NEW ULM, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team scored 29 runs in 15 innings as the Saints easily defeated the Knights in both games of the doubleheader on Friday. CSS won 14-4 in eight innings in the first contest and 15-1 in the second contest, which lasted seven innings.
The Saints jumped out to an early lead in game one, scoring six runs in the first and two in the second to quickly break the game open at 8-0.
Andy Schwantes (Lakeville, Minn./Apple Valley HS (Minn.-Duluth)) knocked in
Kyle Flagstad (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) and
Kyle Jensen (Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake HS) to open up the scoring, and a
Padraic Getchell (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS (North Dakota) ) walk scored
Parker Olson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Minn.-Duluth)) a couple of batters later. The next batter,
Jordan O'Neill (Blaine, Minn./Totino-Grace HS), singled to drive in
Jake Kuschke (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS ) and Schwantes. Getchell completed the scoring as
Austin Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) reached on an error, giving the Saints an early 6-0 lead.
The Saints also picked up a pair of insurance runs in the second as Flagstad singled to left, and promptly stole second and third. Schwantes then reached on an error, allowing Flagstad to score. Schwantes would also cross the plate later in the inning. CSS pushed the lead to 9-0 in the fourth as Kuschke doubled to center, scoring Olson.
Martin Luther would respond with three runs in the fourth as Joe Janke hit a single, scoring Galen Holzhueter. Later in the inning, the Knights would add another two runs as Janke and Andrew Nemmers scored on a Kuschke error, putting the score at 9-3 in favor of the Saints.
The Saints would add five more runs to their lead as Flagstad scored on a wild pitch after being walked to start the sixth. O'Neill reached on an error in the seventh and scored on a
Jesse Heaton (Heyworth, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic HS ) triple. CSS would also string together four singles in the eighth to knock in three runs to put the score at 14-3. The Knights scored a run in the eighth as well on a Matt Olson single, but were unable to start a serious rally attempt, as the game ended 14-4 in favor of CSS.
Jake Nystrom (Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) picked up the win for the Saints, going five innings while giving up six hits and fanning six.
Mickie Keuning (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Angelo State)) tossed the first three innings, giving up just two hits. James Hemmelman was credited with the loss for the Knights, giving up seven hits and eight runs in two innings.
The Saints came out swinging again in the second contest, scoring 11 runs in the first two innings. Colvard started the scoring after a Jensen single and a Knight error. Jensen later scored after a Flagstad single and a wild pitch. A
Jake Casareto (International Falls, Minn./Falls HS) single brought Flagstad home, and Casareto would cross the plate on a single by
Tyler Henderson (Chisago Lakes, Minn./Chisago Lakes HS). Henderson advanced to third on a Schwantes double, and scored the final run of the first inning on a Getchell single.
CSS continued the hit parade in the second, scoring five runs to push the score to 11-0. Flagstad singled to start the inning, and advanced to second on a passed ball. Casareto knocked in Flagstad with a single and also advanced to second on a passed ball. Casareto would then touch the plate after a Henderson walk and an error. Schwantes would then double to right, scoring Henderson and advancing
Jon Kusch (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS ) to third, who reached on the error.
John Hietpas (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge HS ) quickly singled to bring Kusch home and Getchell hit a sacrifice fly to right to bring Schwantes home, giving the Saints an 11-0 lead after two innings of play.
The Saints added three more runs to their lead in the top of the third and sixth innings as well. Flagstad doubled to start the inning, and Casareto picked up his third RBI in as many innings with a single. In the sixth, CSS scored a pair of runs on a fielder's choice and a Flagstad sacrifice fly, giving the Saints a 14-0 lead.
Martin Luther scored its' lone run of the game in the bottom of the sixth. After a pair of walks, two singles by Jake Ziel and Christian Kuehter brought home Ben Edmunson, who had walked to lead off the sixth. However, the Knights would leave two on base, ending any hopes of a possible comeback. For good measure, the Saints added another run in the seventh, putting the final score a 15-1.
Jordan Risse (Sioux Falls, S.D./Washington HS ) picked up the win for the Saints, giving up just four hits in four innings of work.
Michael Swenson (Scandia, Minn./Forest Lake HS) threw the first three innings for the Saints, allowing just two hits and striking out a pair. Tyler Dorn picked up the loss for the Knights, giving up 11 hits and nine earned runs in just two innings.
The Saints (14-7, 4-0 UMAC) look to build a winning streak as it has another doubleheader tomorrow at Minnesota Morris beginning at noon.
