PREVIEW: Baseball Hits the Road for a Pair of UMAC Doubleheaders

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team will travel to face Martin Luther College for a doubleheader on Friday, and take on the University of Minnesota Morris in a pair of games on Saturday. 

Game Schedule:
Friday at Martin Luther – 12:30 p.m. (DH)
Saturday at Minnesota Morris – Noon (DH)

About The Saints
Record: 12-7, 2-0 UMAC

  • The Saints look to rebound from a pair of losses at UW-Stevens Point. The Saints have lost three of their last four games, all against WIAC competition.
  • CSS has not played a conference game since April 1st at Northwestern College.
  • Kyle Flagstad (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) has been a key part of the Saints offense. Flagstad leads the Saints with a .419 slugging percentage, 13 RBIs, 10 walks, three doubles and two triples. He is also second in OBP (.413), runs scored (15) and total bases (26). Flagstad also leads the UMAC with nine stolen bases.
  • Austin Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) and Jordan O'Neill (Blaine, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) have also been swinging the bat well this season. O'Neill leads the team with a .341 average, while Colvard is close behind with an average of .338. Colvard also leads the Saints with 18 runs scored, 24 hits and 27 total bases.
  • The CSS pitching staff has a 3.60 ERA, compared to opponents' 3.98. The Saints also have four players with at least ten innings with an ERA under 2.30.
  • Kyle Jensen (Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake HS) has been solid so far this season, with a 2.00 ERA in 36 innings. Thomas Rogers (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet HS ) has been a steady reliever for the Saints this season as well, with a 1.50 ERA in nine relief appearances and a UMAC-best six saves.
  • The Saints have outscored opponents 88-73 this season, and have not lost when leading after six innings. However, the Saints are 1-7 when tied or trailing after six innings.

Record: 6-8, 2-0 UMAC

  • Despite not playing since April 7th, the Knights look to build off of their 10-2 and 12-1 victories over North Central University. The wins snapped a five-game losing streak.
  • Martin Luther has been led by Jake Ziel, who is hitting a blistering .415 in 41 plate appearances, good for second in the UMAC.
  • Joe Janke has been a solid starter for the Knights, with 24 strikeouts and an ERA of 3.00 in 21 innings.
  • The Knights have struggled offensively this season, with a team batting average of .237. Opponents' batting average is .308.
  • The Knights pitching staff has also struggled this season. Martin Luther has a team ERA of 4.95, while opponents' ERA is 2.94.
