Men’s Tennis Continues Shutout Win Streak

VIRGINIA, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team did not allow Bethany Lutheran College or Martin Luther College to register a win on the way to its fourth and fifth consecutive wins on Saturday.

On Saturday morning, CSS defeated Bethany Lutheran 9-0. Mike Fontana (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (Gustavus Adolphus)) got the ball rolling with a win in singles, followed by wins from Mike Aro (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS), Daniel Mauro, Wells Brose (Mound, Minn./Mound Westonka HS), Matt Tellander (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS) and Jordan Lindholm (Mt. Iron, Minn./Virginia HS). The Knights only managed to record four games in all singles matches.

Doubles action saw No. 1 pairing of Cody Mauston (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) and Alex Nagle (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) shutout their opponent 8-0. The No 2. duo of Brose and Guthrie Coughlin (Staples, Minn./Staples-Motley HS) were victorious with a score of 8-1, and No.3 spot brothers Mike Aro (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) and Steve Aro (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) were victorious with a score of 8-2.

Bethany Lutheran falls to 0-14 overall and 0-6 in the UMAC.

The Saints continued their shutout streak in the afternoon when they recorded a 9-0 victory over Martin Luther. Josh Stainer (Portsmouth, England/South Downs College) shut out his opponent in the No.1 spot, with Nick Lambrecht (Stacy, Minn./North Branch HS (Minn.-Duluth)), Kolin Dean (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander HS), Fontana, Coughlin and Mauston all recording victories in singles action.

In doubles play, No.1 team of Stainer and Dean won by a score of 8-4. No.2 pair of Lambrecht and Dylan Kelly (Minneapolis, Minn./Minneapolis South HS) recorded an 8-1 win, and No. 3 spot duo of Fontana and Tyler Bates (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) shut out their opponent 8-0.

The Saints (16-7, 8-0 UMAC) look to keep their shutout streak alive when they face Minnesota Morris on Sunday. The action is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the Arrowhead Tennis Center in Duluth.
