Baseball Splits with La Crosse in Impromptu Doubleheader

| By:
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LA CROSSE, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team split a doubleheader for the second time this season with the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on Saturday, dropping game one 7-4 and coming out on top in the nightcap 7-5.

Today's games did not come together until late Friday afternoon and then officially Friday night. The Saints were scheduled to face Martin Luther College in a conference series this weekend, but those games got wiped out due to the weather.

A four-run bottom of the fifth was the difference in game one as the Eagles prevailed 7-4. After the Saints stranded runners in scoring position in the first two innings, La Crosse took advantage of a CSS error in the third, plating two in the inning.

The Saints tied it up in the top of the fifth on a Jordan O'Neill (Blaine, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) RBI single and a Kyle Flagstad (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) sacrifice fly. However, the eagles responded with four runs in the bottom frame with three of the four runs coming with two outs.

After La Crosse (10-7) manufactured a run in the seventh to make it 7-2, the Saints tried to make things interesting in the ninth as Jake Casareto (International Falls, Minn./Falls HS) had a RBI single and Tyler Henderson (Chisago Lakes, Minn./Chisago Lakes HS) drew a bases loaded walk to make it 7-4. With the go-ahead run at the plate with one out, the Eagles turned a 4-6-3 double play to end it.

Jordan Risse (Sioux Falls, S.D./Washington HS ) picked up the loss in relief for the Saints. Kyle Jensen (Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake HS) started the game, pitching four innings and scattering four hits. Kevin Johnson earned the win for UW-La Crosse, going six innings and striking out three. The Saints out-hit the Eagles 13-11 with Austin Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) picking up a pair of hits and scoring twice.

It was a four-run fourth inning by the Saints in game two that helped CSS to a 7-5 victory in the nightcap.

After the Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, the Saints took the lead in the second as Parker Olson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Minn.-Duluth)) scored on a throwing error by the pitcher and Padraic Getchell (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS (North Dakota) ) had a RBI single to bring in Jake Kuschke (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS ) to make it 2-1.

After La Crosse tied it at 2-2 on an error in the bottom of the second, the Saints put together a big inning in the fourth. Kuschke and Getchell had back-to-back RBI singles and two Eagle errors allowed two more Saints to score in the inning to make it 6-2.

The Saints added an insurance run in the seventh on a Casareto RBI single to make it 7-2. Much like game one, the Eagles made a game of it in the ninth. La Crosse loaded the bases with one out and was able to get two runs across before there were two outs. A two-out RBI made it 7-5, putting the go-ahead run at the plate. However, Thomas Rogers (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet HS ) was able to get the final out on a groundout to give the Saints the 7-5 victory.

Michael Swenson (Scandia, Minn./Forest Lake HS) earned the win in relief, going three innings, striking out four and allowing just two hits. Mickie Keuning (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Angelo State)) got the start for the Saints and went four innings, scattering six hits. Getchell was 2-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the offense.

The Saints (12-5) are scheduled to play North Central University this upcoming weekend. That series will more than likely take place in the Twin Cities. Keep checking csssaints.com for schedule updates.
