Box Score 2 MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (csssaints.com) – It was a battle of midwest perennial powers as the No. 21 ranked St. Scholastica baseball team had a doubleheader showdown with No. 2 ranked St. Thomas in the HHH Metrodome today with the Saints earning the victory in game one by a score 3-2, but the Tommies rebounded to take game two by a score of 6-3.
In game one the Saints and Tommies played four scoreless innings until finally at the top of the fifth inning, the Tommies were able to break the deadlock off of a RBI single to put UST up 1-0.
The Saints would respond in the bottom of the sixth inning when
Jake Casareto (International Falls, Minn./Falls HS) would single to left field, advancing two runners and scoring
Austin Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) from third base to knot the game up 1-1.
CSS was not done in the scoring column as a stellar at bat from
Kyle Jensen (Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake HS), which featured two strikes, two balls, six foul balls, one ball, five more foul balls, and then a called fourth ball, brought in
Parker Olson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Minn.-Duluth)) from third base.
Tyler Henderson (Chisago Lakes, Minn./Chisago Lakes HS) kept the hitting alive with an RBI single to left field scoring
Kyle Flagstad (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) from third.
The Saints would leave the bases loaded and would head into the final inning with a 3-1 lead.
The final inning saw Saints closer
Thomas Rogers (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet HS ) come in for the save. Rogers struck out the first batter of the inning but walked the second. A UST bunt by the third batter allowed the Tommies to have runners on first and second with only one out. The Tommies would advance the runners on a fielder's choice on the fourth batter of the inning.
UST would get a RBI double from its fifth batter of the inning but Rogers held his composure striking out the sixth batter for the final out, enabling the Saints to win 3-2. It was Rogers' second save of the season.
The Tommies had nine hits in game one while the Saints had five hits. Neither team committed an error in the game.
Mickie Keuning (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Angelo State)) picked up the win for the Saints, his first of the year. Jensen pitched the first five innings allowing six hits but only one earned run.
In game two of the doubleheader, the Saints struck first in the opening inning as Jensen reached base off of a throwing error which scored Flagstad from third base. The Tommies would respond in the bottom of the second inning off of a RBI double to tie the game up 1-1.
The third inning was full of runs for both sides as another Jensen infield hit allowed Flagstad to score from third base, but this time Jensen would be throw out at first. The Saints stranded a base runner on third base after a strikeout to end the inning.
UST would respond in the bottom half of the inning as a pair of RBI singles rocketed the Tommies to a 3-2 lead after three innings. The Tommies would add another run an inning later off of a RBI single. The fifth inning was much of the same as a sacrifice fly gave UST a 5-2 lead after five innings.
The Saints would answer in the top of the sixth inning off of a Casareto home run. In the bottom of the sixth, UST would tack on another run off of another RBI single.
The Saints would be unable to produce any more significant offense in the seventh, dropping game two by a score of 6-3.
No. 2 ranked UST (3-1) finished game two with 12 hits, but did commit three errors. The Tommies used three pitchers in game two, as each pitcher pitched 2.1, 2.2, and 2.0 innings, respectively.
Jake Nystrom (Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) took the loss of the Saints, his second of the year. Nystrom allowed seven hits and four earned runs, but did strikeout five UST batters.
Padraic Getchell (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS (North Dakota) ) and
Jordan Risse (Sioux Falls, S.D./Washington HS ) also pitched an inning apiece in relief of Nystrom.
The Saints were held to four hits in game two and committed one error in the field.
No. 21 ranked CSS (2-2) will travel to Florida next week for a seven game Spring Break trip featuring five different matchups including two doubleheaders.
