PREVIEW: Tennis Teams Open Conference Play at Home Friday

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's and women tennis teams will begin Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action on Friday at the Arrowhead Tennis Center against North Central University.

About the Saints
Record: 8-6

  • The Saints are coming off a spring trip, in which, they only went 1-5.
  • After starting the season a program-best 6-0, CSS is just 2-6 since then.
  • However, during that span, the Saints had been without one of their top players in James Mack (Portsmouth, England/Cams Hill School).
  • The Saints are 50-34 in singles play this season with Nick Lambrecht (Stacy, Minn./North Branch HS (Minn.-Duluth)) leading the way with 10 victories.
  • In doubles action, the Saints are 24-18 with the team of Tyler Bates (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) and Cody Mauston (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) leading with way with six wins.

  • CSS is 51-21 in singles action this season, led by top player Hillary Bungarden (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS), who has 10 wins at the No. 1 spot.
  • The Saints are 24-12 in doubles action with the team of Bungarden and Alexis Gunderson (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) leading the way with seven victories.

  • North Central is opening its season against the Saints on Friday.
  • North Central will be led by first year head coach Larry Bach in 2013.
  • Freshman Megan Gusmer has experience in number one doubles and number two singles during her senior year at Minnewaska (Minn.) High School in 2012.
  • Freshman Nicole Demuth was a number two doubles player at Rocori (Minn.) in 2012 and could form part of a quality doubles team for NCU in 2013.
  • Freshman Mary Metzger has experience in both doubles and singles action at Oakwood (Minn.) High School.
