MADISON, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team suffered its first defeat of the season against the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on Saturday, but responded in the nightcap with a win over Edgewood College.
The Saints opened with the Eagles of UW-La Crosse. CSS would not get on the board falling 9-0 to the Eagles. The tightest match was at No. 3 singles as
Nick Lambrecht (Stacy, Minn./North Branch HS (Minn.-Duluth)) suffered his first loss of the season in a third set super-breaker 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 10-8. The Eagles won their fifth straight match and improve to 9-4 on the year.
CSS then faced host Edgewood and would be on the right end of a 9-0 score. Lambrecht bounced back from his close loss against La Crosse, to win at No. 1 singles 6-2, 7-5.
Mike Fontana (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (Gustavus Adolphus)) at No. 2 singles and
Kolin Dean (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander HS) at No. 3 singles won by identical 6-3, 6-0 scores.
Fontana and Dean also teamed up to win at No. 2 doubles 8-5.
Guthrie Coughlin (Staples, Minn./Staples-Motley HS) won his first collegiate match at No. 4 singles 6-3, 6-4.
Tyler Bates (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) won by the same scores at No. 5 singles for his first collegiate singles victory. At the No. 6 spot,
Mike Aro (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) won his first match of the season 6-2, 7-5.
Wells Brose (Mound, Minn./Mound Westonka HS) also saw his first collegiate action partnering with
Alex Nagle (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) at No. 3 doubles to win 8-2. The finals winners of the night were the No. 1 doubles team of
Josh Stainer (Portsmouth, England/South Downs College) and
Cullen Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) by an 8-6 score.
The Saints (7-1) will now head to Orlando, Fla. for their annual spring break trip. The Saints begin play next Sunday against Central College (Iowa) and Illinois Wesleyan University.
