Box Score 2 FT. PIERCE, Fla. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team defeated both Hilbert College (N.Y.) and Bridgewater State University (Mass.) on Friday for its third and fourth wins on its spring trip.
The Saints opened with Hilbert and won by final score of 13-3. The Saints scored two runs in four of the first five innings and then added four in the seventh.
Andy Schwantes (Lakeville, Minn./Apple Valley HS (Minn.-Duluth)) drove in a run and
Jake Casareto (International Falls, Minn./Falls HS) scored on a wild pitch in the first.
Jesse Heaton (Heyworth, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic HS ) then had a RBI and also scored on a wild pitch in the second to extend the CSS lead to 4-0.
After both teams plated a run in the third inning, CSS scored a couple of runs on a pair of errors by Hilbert to make it 7-1.
David Vogelgesang (Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) and
Austin Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) drove in Heaton in the sixth to make it 9-1.
The Hawks recorded two more runs, but the Saints added four in the seventh thanks to RBI singles by
Jon Kusch (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS ) and
Jordan O'Neill (Blaine, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) and a RBI double by
Sam Christofferson (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS ).
Joel Wuorio (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors HS) pitched five innings and struck out three to get the win.
Jordan Risse (Sioux Falls, S.D./Washington HS ) struck out five in the final three innings to earn the save.
In the second game of the day, the Saints defeated Bridgewater State 6-1. The game featured the return of
Andy Davis (Chippewa Falls, Wis./McDonell HS ) on the mound for the Saints. Davis went three innings for CSS, striking out two and not allowing a run.
The Bears got on the scoreboard first with a RBI groundout in the fourth. The Saints responded in the bottom frame on a RBI single by Colvard brining in
Tyler Henderson (Chisago Lakes, Minn./Chisago Lakes HS).
It remained tied until the bottom of the sixth.
Kyle Jensen (Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake HS) began the inning with a double that was lost in the sun. CSS then recorded three straight singles with
Jordan O'Neill (Blaine, Minn./Totino-Grace HS)'s driving in Jensen to make it 2-1.
Parker Olson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Minn.-Duluth)) then hit a sacrifice fly to plate Henderson. Later in the inning, a big two-out single by Schwantes drove in two to make it a 5-1 St. Scholastica lead.
The Saints added one more insurance run in the eighth as
Kyle Flagstad (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) scored on a Heaton groundout to make the final score 6-1.
Padraic Getchell (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS (North Dakota) ) earned his first win as a Saint, going four innings in relief, striking out three.
Thomas Rogers (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet HS ) struck out three and allowed just one hit in two innings on the backend. O'Neill went 3-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored.
The Bears who were a NCAA Tournament team a year ago and were receiving votes in the D3baseball.com poll fell to 4-4 with the loss.
The Saints (6-3) will wrap up their action in Florida tomorrow when it faces Richard Stockton (N.J.) in doubleheader in Vero Beach. The action is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. local time. All of the action can be heard live on Saints Sports Net.
