ORLANDO, Fla. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team fell to both Roger Williams University (R.I.) and Judson University (Ill.) on Thursday to wrap up its spring trip.
The Saints opened the day against Roger Williams and fell by a 6-3 score. The No. 1 doubles team of
Josh Stainer (Portsmouth, England/South Downs College) and
Kolin Dean (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander HS) pulled out an 8-6 win. In singles action,
Nick Lambrecht (Stacy, Minn./North Branch HS (Minn.-Duluth)) won at the No. 2 spot 6-4, 6-2. The third winner for the Saints was
Guthrie Coughlin (Staples, Minn./Staples-Motley HS) at No. 6 singles by a pair of tiebreakers 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-4).
Then in the nightcap, the Saints faced Judson in a rescheduled match due to Tuesday's rain. The Saints led 4-3 when the lights went out at the complex. When action resumed Judson won the two remaining singles matches in third set super-breakers to take the match 5-4.
The Saints dropped two of the three doubles matches with the lone winners being the No. 2 tandem of
Cullen Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) and Lambrecht 8-6.
Combs was also victorious in singles at the No. 3 spot 6-3, 6-3.
Mike Fontana (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (Gustavus Adolphus)) won at No. 4 singles 6-0, 6-3. Coughlin also won at No. 6 by scores of 6-4, 6-3.
However, Judson prevailed at No. 2 singles 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), (10-4) and No. 3 singles 6-4, 5-7, (10-8) to take the match.
The Saints (8-6) will be back in action next Friday when they return home to open Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action against North Central University. That match is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. at the Arrowhead Tennis Center.
