ORLANDO, Fla. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team won its first match down in Florida on Monday defeating Saint Ambrose University (Iowa), but fell in the afternoon to Marian University (Ind.). Both opponents are NAIA programs.
The Saints began the day with a 6-3 victory over Saint Ambrose. CSS won two matches by default and those came at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles. The other four wins came in singles. At No. 1,
Josh Stainer (Portsmouth, England/South Downs College) won 6-4, 6-2.
Nick Lambrecht (Stacy, Minn./North Branch HS (Minn.-Duluth)) came out on top at the No. 2 spot 6-2, 6-2.
Dylan Kelly (Minneapolis, Minn./Minneapolis South HS) was victorious at the No. 3 spot 6-1, 6-1.
Dan Mauro (Thunder Bay, Ontario/St. Ignatius HS) was the final winner at No.5 by scores of 6-2, 6-0.
In the afternoon, the Saints were only able to win one match against a strong Marian squad.
Guthrie Coughlin (Staples, Minn./Staples-Motley HS) was the lone winner for CSS, coming out on top in a third set super-breaker at No. 4 singles by scores of 3-6, 6-4, (10-7). The Knights improved to 13-4 with the win.
The Saints (8-4) will face another NAIA program tomorrow in Judson University (Ill.). That match is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. local time.
