Baseball Cruises Past Messiah in Florida Opener

Box Score FT. PIERCE, Fla. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team scored 11 runs from the fifth inning on in a 13-3 victory over Messiah College (Pa.) on Monday to open its spring trip.

The Saints got a second strong outing on the mound from senior Michael Swenson (Scandia, Minn./Forest Lake HS) this year as he went seven scoreless, allowing just three hits and striking out four.

CSS got its first run of the game in the bottom of the first when Kyle Flagstad (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) singled in Austin Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS). Colvard would go 3-for-3 on the day with two runs scored and a RBI.

Senior Jordan O'Neill (Blaine, Minn./Totino-Grace HS), making his first start since his sophomore season drove in the Saints' second run in the second as freshman Sam Christofferson (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS ) came around to score.

After Jake Casareto (International Falls, Minn./Falls HS) and David Vogelgesang (Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) had RBI singles in the fifth, the Saints opened it up in the sixth, plating four runs in the inning. Tyler Henderson (Chisago Lakes, Minn./Chisago Lakes HS) had a RBI double in the inning and Casareto recorded another RBI single.

Freshman Jordan Risse (Sioux Falls, S.D./Washington HS ) and sophomores John Hietpas (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge HS ) and Shayne Ciernia (Eagan, Minn./Breck HS ) all had RBIs in the seventh as the Saints extended the lead to 11-0.

Padraic Getchell (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS (North Dakota) ) scored on a wild pitch and Hietpas drove in Matt Hanse (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS) in the eighth to make it 13-0. The Falcons would get a bases loaded triple with two outs in the ninth to break up the shutout as the Saints went on to win 13-3.

The Saints registered 17 hits in the win and that is four more than they had in the first four games combined. Messiah falls to 2-5 with the loss.

The Saints (3-2) will face 13th-ranked Keystone College (Pa.) in a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 8 a.m. local time. All of the action can be heard live on Saints Sports Net.
