Men’s Tennis Drops a Pair of Matches on First Day of Spring Trip

ORLANDO, Fla. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team dropped its first two matches of its spring trip on Sunday, falling to Illinois Wesleyan University and Central College (Iowa).

The Saints opened with Illinois Wesleyan and fell to the Titans 6-3. The three wins for the Saints came at the bottom of the lineup at No. 3 doubles and Nos. 5 and 6 singles. The No. 3 doubles team of Nick Lambrecht (Stacy, Minn./North Branch HS (Minn.-Duluth)) and Guthrie Coughlin (Staples, Minn./Staples-Motley HS) blanked their opponents 8-0.

At No. 5 singles Dylan Kelly (Minneapolis, Minn./Minneapolis South HS) came out on top 6-2, 6-2. Kolin Dean (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander HS) was the final winner at the No. 6 spot 6-3, 6-4. The Titans improved to 2-1 with the win.

Later in the day, the Saints lost to Central by a close 5-4 score. CSS took two of the three doubles matches as the No. 2 team of Dean and Kelly and No. 3 duo of Cody Mauston (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) an Tyler Bates (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) both won by 8-5 scores.

In singles action, Lambrecht won at the No. 2 spot 6-2, 6-3. Kelly also won at the No. 3 spot 6-1, 6-2. The match that could have swayed the result was at No. 5 singles where the Dutch came out on top in super-breaker 6-1, 0-6, (10-6). Central improved to 7-2 with the victory.

The Saints (7-3) will face both Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) and Marian University (Ind.) tomorrow. Both opponents are NAIA schools. The Saint Ambrose match is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. (ET) and the Marian match at 3:30 p.m. (ET).
