DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team defeated Bethel University 7-2 on Friday in its home opener at the Arrowhead Tennis Center.
The Saints began the match by winning two of the three doubles matches.
James Mack (Portsmouth, England/Cams Hill School) and
Kolin Dean (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander HS) won 8-6 at the No. 2 spot.
Cody Mauston (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) and
Tyler Bates (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) were the other winners at No. 3 by a score of 8-4.
In singles play, the Saints took spots two through six in the order. Mack won 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot.
Cullen Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) was victorious at the No. 3 spot 7-6 (7-2), 6-3. At No. 4
Nick Lambrecht (Stacy, Minn./North Branch HS (Minn.-Duluth)) blanked his opponent 6-0, 6-0.
Dylan Kelly (Minneapolis, Minn./Minneapolis South HS) had to battle in the second set after cruising through the first to win 6-0, 7-6 (7-1).
Mike Fontana (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (Gustavus Adolphus)) was the final winner on the day at No. 6 by scores of 6-3, 6-0. The win snaps a four-match losing streak to the Royals.
The Saints (2-0) will play at a neutral site tomorrow when they travel to White Bear Lake to faceoff against Simpson College around 8 p.m. at Lifetime Fitness. Also, Sunday's scheduled contest at Concordia College-Moorhead has been postponed due to the approaching winter storm. That match has been rescheduled for Sunday, February 17th.
