Box Score 2 MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team began the 2013 year in a non-conference doubleheader matchup against Macalester College at the HHH Metrodome in Minneapolis. The No. 22 ranked Saints dropped game one 6-1, but rebounded in game two to win 1-0 Monday night.
In game one, the Scots used a 2-RBI single and a pair of RBI singles to jump out to a quick 4-0 lead in the opening inning. Macalester would add another RBI single in the third inning to lead the Saints 5-0. The Saints would score their first run of the year when
Austin Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) came around to score off of a
Parker Olson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Minn.-Duluth)) sacrifice fly.
In the seventh inning, Macalester would add another run when the CSS pitcher would commit an errant throw off of a sacrifice bunt, allowing the Scots to take game one 6-1.
C.J. Smith pitched a two-hitter including nine strikeouts and just three walks for the Scots.
Jake Nystrom (Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) took the loss for the Saints, allowing five earned runs off of five hits. Nystrom did strike out two batters.
Padraic Getchell (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS (North Dakota) ) pitched three innings as well, allowing five hits but no earned runs.
The Saints would only have two hits in the entire game compared to ten by the Scots. Both teams committed two errors in the game.
In game two, the Saints were the ones to score in the opening inning as once again Colvard scored from third base off of an Olson groundout to the second basemen.
The rest of the game would be a pitcher's duel as CSS's
Michael Swenson (Scandia, Minn./Forest Lake HS),
Mickie Keuning (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Angelo State)), and
Thomas Rogers (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet HS ) pitched seven shutout innings to propel the Saints to a 1-0 victory.
The three CSS pitchers combined to allow only three hits and one walk while striking out three Scot batters. Macalester (1-1) pitcher Nathan Kelleher-Crew pitched a complete game two-hitter in the loss.
The Saints committed one error in game two, while the Scots committed two errors.
St. Scholastica (1-1), currently ranked No. 22 in the latest NCAA D3 rankings will travel back to the Metrodome next week as they face No. 2 ranked University of St. Thomas next Monday night in a double-header action.
