Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The 10th-ranked St. Scholastica men's hockey team finished off the weekend sweep of Lake Forest College (Ill.) with a 5-1 win Saturday behind two short-handed goals from
Alex Valenti (Blaine, Wash./Bellingham HS (Merritt-BCHL) ) and
Brandon Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Central Memorial HS (Calgary Royals-AJHL)).
The scoring got started early and often for the Saints with two first period goals within one minute and 13 seconds of one another.
Michael Spring (Kelowna, British Columbia/Okanagan Mission (Chilliwack-BCHL) ) shot one past Lake Forest goalie Austin Severson at the 14:36 mark with
Brandon Millin (Port Moody, British Columbia/Heritage Woods HS (Notre Dame Hounds-SJHL) ) and
Dave Williams (Okotoks, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) notching the assists. Then at the 13:23 point
Matt Malenstyn (Surrey, British Columbia/Tamanawis Secondary (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) put another goal past Severson with the assists being tallied by
Joel Paiement (Okotoks, Alberta/Holy Trinity Academy (Calgary Canucks-AJHL) ) and
Bobby Lipsett (Salmon Arm, British Columbia/Salmon Arm Secondary (Salmon Arm-BCHL) ).
The first of the two short-handed goals came just 55 seconds into the second period when Valenti broke away from the Lake Forest defense and beat Severson to make the score 3-0 Saints early in the second.
Nowakowski's short-handed score came at the 15:45 minute mark when he took a deflected pass and snapped a shot into the back of the net to put the score at 4-0 in favor of the Saints.
The Foresters would finally capitalize on the power-play late in the second when Mike Violette beat Saints goalie
Tyler Bruggeman (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Austin-NAHL) ). The goal came on a 5-on-3 advantage after two CSS penalties.
The four-goal lead would be restored one minute and 55 seconds into the third period when
Steven Phee (Balzac, Alberta/George McDougall HS (Canmore-AJHL) ) scored an unassisted goal to set the final score at 5-1 Saints.
Despite the lopsided score, the Foresters outshot the Saints 32-22. Bruggeman stopped 31 shots to improve to 5-0-0 this season. Severson had 17 saves in the loss for the Foresters (5-6-0, 4-4-0 NCHA).
The Saints (8-1-2, 6-0-2 NCHA) will next be in action this Friday when they travel to Collegeville, Minn. to take on Saint John's University. That game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. and can be heard on Saints Sports Net.
