Box Score MEQUON, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The 14th-ranked St. Scholastica men's hockey team held a 3-1 lead early in the second period and a 5-4 lead midway through the third period, but had to settle for a 5-5 tie against Concordia University Wisconsin Friday night in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) play.
Dylan Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial HS (Brooks-AJHL) ) put the Saints up 1-0, eight minutes into contest.
Josh Hansen (Chilliwack, British Columbia/Unity Christian School (Chilliwack-BCHL) ) and
Matt Malenstyn (Surrey, British Columbia/Tamanawis Secondary (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) had the assists. Less than three minutes later,
Chad Golanowski (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Carroll HS (Calgary Canucks-AJHL) ) made it 2-0 CSS on the power-play.
Derek Sutliffe (Las Vegas, Nev./Odyssey Charter School (Langley Rivermen-BCHL) ) and
Michael Spring (Kelowna, British Columbia/Okanagan Mission (Chilliwack-BCHL) ) were credited with the assists. The Falcons scored with five minutes to go in the period to make it 2-1 St. Scholastica at the first intermission.
Brandon Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Central Memorial HS (Calgary Royals-AJHL)) scored one minute and 41 seconds in the second period to give the Saints a 3-1 lead. His brother, Dylan, and
Paul Marcoux (Brandon, Manitoba /Vincent Massey Collegiate (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) had the assists. However, Concordia answered less than two minutes later and added two more goals, two minutes apart, towards the end of the period to take a 4-3 lead into the second intermission.
It remained 4-3 until
Dylan Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial HS (Brooks-AJHL) ) tied the game with 11:34 left in the third period. Marcoux and brother, Brandon, had the assists. Just 24 seconds later,
Alex Valenti (Blaine, Wash./Bellingham HS (Merritt-BCHL) ) gave the Saints a 5-4 lead with Sutliffe and
Brandon Millin (Port Moody, British Columbia/Heritage Woods HS (Notre Dame Hounds-SJHL) ) credited with the assists.
The Falcons tied it at 5-5 on the power-play with 7:40 left. The Saints would have two power-plays after that, including one that extended into overtime, but could not capitalize. CSS also had to kill a penalty in the final 34 seconds of OT to preserve the 5-5 tie.
The Saints had a slight edge in shots at 45-43.
Colin Rundell (Tees, Alberta/Lacombe Composite (Alaska-Fairbanks) ) made 38 saves for the Saints, while Jake Hebda had 40 saves for the Falcons. Both teams committed five penalties for 10 minutes.
The Saints (2-0-1, 2-0-1 NCHA) and Falcons (2-0-1, 2-0-1 NCHA) will complete their two-game series tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
