MILWAUKEE, Wis. (csssaints.com) –
Colin Rundell (Tees, Alberta/Lacombe Composite (Alaska-Fairbanks) ) stopped all 25 shots he saw in the St. Scholastica men's hockey team's 2-0 victory over the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) on Saturday in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) play.
The series sweep is the first by the Saints to open a season since the 2009-10 season when they swept UW-Stevens Point on the road.
The first goal of the contest came with 3:50 remaining in the opening period when
Michael Spring (Kelowna, British Columbia/Okanagan Mission (Chilliwack-BCHL) ) scored his first collegiate goal.
Joel Paiement (Okotoks, Alberta/Holy Trinity Academy (Calgary Canucks-AJHL) ) and
Josh Hansen (Chilliwack, British Columbia/Unity Christian School (Chilliwack-BCHL) ) were credited for the assists.
The only other goal came in the second period, six minutes in, when
Paul Marcoux (Brandon, Manitoba /Vincent Massey Collegiate (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) scored for the second straight game to make it 2-0.
Dylan Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial HS (Brooks-AJHL) ) and
Brandon Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Central Memorial HS (Calgary Royals-AJHL)) had the assists.
CSS was out-shot in all three periods as the final shot tally was 25-19 in favor of the Raiders (0-2-0, 0-2-0 NCHA). Rundell earns his third career shutout as he has had one each of the two previous seasons. Nick Kohn had 17 saves in the loss for MSOE. Both teams went a combined 0-for-6 on the power-play.
The Saints (2-0-0, 2-0-0 NCHA) will be back in Milwaukee next weekend when they face Concordia University (Wis.) for a two-game series. The first game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday night.
