Box Score ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team was tripped up in its season opener as it fell to NAIA affiliate Mayville State 81-69 Saturday afternoon in the Saint Cloud State Tournament.
Mayville State jumped out to a quick 4-0 to open the game until
Steve Golobich (Mountain Iron, Minn./Mountain Iron-Buhl HS (Mesabi Range CC)) hit his first three pointer of the season to make it 4-3 two minutes into the contest.
Trevor Morlock (Rogers, Minn./Rogers HS (Minn., Crookston)) hit a jumper to put the Saints up 5-4 on the following offensive possession.
The teams would trade baskets for the next several minutes until MSU jumped out to a 32-24 lead with eight minutes left in the first half. The Saints never let the Comets get a double digit lead in the first half and trailed at the break 43-36.
CSS shot 50-percent in the first half while the Comets shot 55-percent.
The second half saw the Saints score four quick points, two from Morlock and two from
LaMonte Hall (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle HS (Saint Mary’s)). MSU would slowly build its lead and at the 9:52 mark finally established a double digit lead on the Saints, 60-50.
CSS would try to chip away at the lead but the Comets would extend the lead to as much as 20 points before the Saints cut the lead down to 12 with 17 seconds left in the contest. The Saints would fall 81-69.
Mayville State (3-0) was led by DJ Carroll with 24 points. Three other Comet players eclipsed double digits. MSU finished the game shooting 49-percent from the field, but was just 1-for-13 beyond the arc. The Comets finished shooting 80-percent from the free-throw line and committed 15 turnovers on the day.
CSS was led by Morlock with 14 points and nine rebounds. Hall added 11 points, six rebounds, and two steals while
Julius Johnson (Minneapolis, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) and
Nathan Carlson (Alvarado, Minn./East Grand Forks HS) chipped in 10 points apiece for the Saints.
The Saints finished shooting 43-percent from the field, 24-percent from beyond the arc, and 63-percent from the free-throw line.
CSS would commit 17 turnovers on the day and had four less rebounds than the Comets (39-35).
St. Scholastica (0-1) will look for its first win of the season as it faces Saint John's tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. in the Saints' second contest of the SCSU Tournament. Tune into csssaints.com for updates from this game.
