Saints Special Teams Key in Season-Opening Win

Box Score MILWAUKEE, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team went 4-for-5 on the power-play and 7-for-8 on the penalty-kill to defeat the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) 4-3 Friday night in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) opener.

Only one of the seven goals scored was recorded at even-strength. That goal was the very first as Patrick LeBeau scored with less than five minutes remaining in the opening period to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead at the first intermission. MSOE had an 11-8 shot advantage in the period.

The second period saw the Saints come alive with three straight power-play goals. The first was by freshman Derek Sutliffe (Las Vegas, Nev./Odyssey Charter School (Langley Rivermen-BCHL) ) over nine minutes into the period. Newcomer Derek Hills (Campbell River, British Columbia/Timberline Secondary (Bowling Green State) ) and Matt Malenstyn (Surrey, British Columbia/Tamanawis Secondary (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) had the assists.

With 4:35 remaining, Brandon Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Central Memorial HS (Calgary Royals-AJHL)) gave the Saints a 2-1 lead with assists from Michael Spring (Kelowna, British Columbia/Okanagan Mission (Chilliwack-BCHL) ) and Dave Williams (Okotoks, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ). A little over a minute later the Nowakowski brothers hooked up as Dylan Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial HS (Brooks-AJHL) ) scored with an assist from B. Nowakowski to make it 3-1.

The Raiders scored in the power-play with less than two minutes left in the second period to make it 3-2 Saints at the second intermission. Shots were even at 9-9 in the second.

MSOE tied the contest with a short-handed goal from Devin Schmitt about midway through the third period. However with 4:33 remaining, senior Paul Marcoux (Brandon, Manitoba /Vincent Massey Collegiate (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) netted the game winner with the man-advantage to give CSS a 4-3 lead. The Saints would kill a penalty in the final minute and go on to win 4-3.

The Raiders had the advantage in shot 29-25. Colin Rundell (Tees, Alberta/Lacombe Composite (Alaska-Fairbanks) ) made 26 saves to earn the win for the Saints. Nick Kohn had 21 saves in the loss for the Raiders. This marks the second straight year the Saints have won their season opener.
