DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team will begin a new era on Friday night when it opens the season against the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) in the new look Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA).

-The Saints, along with St. Norbert College, joined the eight teams of the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association (MCHA) at the conclusion of last season to form the new NCHA.
-CSS finished last season strong, going 9-3-1 in its final 13 games to finish fourth in the then seve-team NCHA and host a NCHA Postseason first round series.
-During the late season run, the Saints defeated four ranked teams, including fourth-ranked St. Norbert College, 14th-ranked UW-Stevens Point and fourth-ranked and eventual NCAA Division III National Champion UW-Eau Claire in a three-game stretch.
-The Saints advanced to the NCHA Peters Cup semifinals for the sixth time in the last seven seasons.
-CSS returns 19 players from last year's squad led by senior captain
Brandon Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Central Memorial HS (Calgary Royals-AJHL)). Nowakowski was an honorable mention All-NCHA choice in his junior campaign.
-His line mates, senior
Paul Marcoux (Brandon, Manitoba /Vincent Massey Collegiate (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) and sophomore brother
Dylan Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial HS (Brooks-AJHL) ) are also back. That line that was tough for opponents to contain towards the end of last season. Marcoux recorded six points in the final six games, while B. Nowakowski had nine points and D. Nowakowski had eight points during that span.
-Assistant captains
Alex Valenti (Blaine, Wash./Bellingham HS (Merritt-BCHL) ) and
Dave Williams (Okotoks, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) are also back. Valenti recorded 19 points a season ago and was tied for fourth on the team in goals scored. Williams was CSS's Best Defensive Player last season, consistently giving up his body to block shots on the penalty kill. Williams earned NCHA Player of the Week during his sophomore season.
-The Saints also return both net minders this season. Senior
Colin Rundell (Tees, Alberta/Lacombe Composite (Alaska-Fairbanks) ) finished at 10-10 last season after being 4-9 at one point. Rundell lowered his goals-against-average by 0.42 in the final eight games of the season. Sophomore
Tyler Bruggeman (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Austin-NAHL) ) jump started the Saints' winning ways in the second half of the season with three straight wins in mid-January.
-Head coach
Mark Wick has been happy with the way his newcomers have been playing in camp thus far. Coach Wick brought in five freshmen and one transfer as part of his recruiting class. The one transfer was defenseman
Derek Hills (Campbell River, British Columbia/Timberline Secondary (Bowling Green State) ), who comes in from Division I Bowling Green.
-The Saints are picked to finish third in the NCHA, according to the preseason coaches' poll.

Milwaukee School of Engineering Raiders

-The Milwaukee School of Engineering has won three regular season and three Harris Cup titles as part of the MCHA.
-The Raiders lost the team's top two scorers from a year ago in all-conference forwards Brad Tierney and Jordan Keizer. The duo combined for 30 goals and 27 assists.
- Despite the loss of the top two scorers, MSOE does return its next four-highest scorers, including junior Kevin LoGiudice and sophomores Cody Ganchar and Casey Moneer.
-On defense, a high level of experience returns, led by senior captain Michael Thompson, senior Devin Schmitt and junior Logan Bauman. Thompson was an All-MCHA selection last season as he contributed to one of the top defenses in the conference, while also finishing fourth on the team in scoring on the strength of a team-high 16 assists.
-Backing up the defense will be sophomore goaltender Nick Kohn. Kohn started every game last season as a rookie and led the nation with almost 1,719 minutes, while ranking in the top 20 nationally in goals against average (2.13), save percentage (.924) and shutouts (3).
-MSOE has been picked to finish fourth in the NCHA this season, according to the preseason coaches' poll.
