Box Score WHITEWATER, Wis. – The St. Scholastica baseball team almost erased a 6-2 deficit, but ended up on the losing end of a 6-5 score to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at the NCAA Division III Whitewater Regional at Prucha Field.

The Saints got a runner on third in the bottom of the first, but would line into a double play to end the inning. The Warhawks would capitalize in the top of the second with a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0. CSS tied it up in its half of the second as Brandon Peterson (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) hit a ground-rule double scoring Tom Juberian (Park Rapids, Minn./Park Rapids HS). However, the Saints would strand another runner at third base.

Whitewater took the lead again in the top of the fourth with a two-out, two-run double to make the score 3-1. In the bottom frame, the Saints loaded the bases with no outs. Jake Casareto (International Falls, Minn./Falls HS) scored on an Andy Schwantes (Lakeville, Minn./Apple Valley HS (Minn.-Duluth)) ground ball, but that is all St. Scholastica would get, leaving the bases loaded with the score 3-2 Whitewater.

The Warhawks extended their lead to 5-2 with a RBI double and RBI single in the fifth. After Whitewater scored on a squeeze bunt in the top of the seventh, the Saints got the offense going again in the bottom half as Casareto and Schwantes each had RBI singles to make the score 6-4.

CSS kept it going in the eighth inning as Kyle Jensen (Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake HS) and Kyle Flagstad (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) each drew walks to lead off the inning. Kyle Moody (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS ) followed with a RBI single to put runners at the corners and the score 6-5. However, the Saints would line into a double play and then strikeout to leave Flagstad at third.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Saints got a runner to second with one out, but a groundout and strikeout ended the game and the season for the Saints.

For the game the Saints left 15 runners on base, including stranding a runner in scoring position in eight of the nine innings. The 15 runners left on base, matched a season-high. In fact, in two of the four games at the regional, the Saints left 15 runners on base (Aurora).

Mickie Keuning (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Angelo State)) picked up the loss for the Saints, going five innings and allowing six hits. Thomas Rogers (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet HS ) had another good outing in relief, allowing one hit in 2.2 innings. CSS outhit the Warhawks 11-10.

The Saints' season will end with a 35-11 record, while the Warhawks (33-16) move on to face the University of St. Thomas in the regional championship game. Whitewater must defeat the Tommies twice to win the title.

CSS will say goodbye to a senior class of six. Ben Grieger (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock HS), Tom Juberian (Park Rapids, Minn./Park Rapids HS), Kyle Moody (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS ), Brandon Peterson (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS), Tom Spaniol (St. Joseph, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS ) and Dan Ubl (St. Paul Park, Minn./Park HS) all have left their mark on the program.
