Plethora of Runs Propels Baseball to Weekend Sweep of Cougars

| By:
Box Score The CSS baseball team had no trouble scoring runs in a 19-4 victory over the Minnesota-Morris Cougars on Saturday at Wade Stadium.

The win over the Cougars (3-14, 3-4 UMAC) completes the weekend sweep but marks the first time since 2007 that Minn.-Morris has scored more than two runs against CSS.  The Cougars have not defeated the Saints since 1996.

The Saints didn't waste any time as Kyle Moody (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS ) knocked in two runs with an RBI double in the first to give CSS an early 2-0 lead.

St. Scholastica opened it up in the second as Kyle Flagstad (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) cleared the loaded bases with an RBI triple to put CSS up 5-0.

The Saints offense continued in the second as Moody, Shayne Ciernia (Eagan, Minn./Breck HS ), Tom Juberian (Park Rapids, Minn./Park Rapids HS) and Jake Casareto (International Falls, Minn./Falls HS) knocked in five more runs in the inning to put St. Scholastica up 10-0 after two.

Down by 17 in the fifth, the Cougars finally got on the board with a couple of unearned runs to make an attempt at a comeback, but the Saints would get the runs right back as Thomas Jezierski (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet HS) and Matt Hanse (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS) each had an RBI base hit in the bottom half of the inning.

Two more runs came the Cougars' way in the sixth but that is all the Saints would allow as CSS went on to victory 19-4.

Jake Nystrom (Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) earned the victory on the mound for CSS as he went three no-hit innings while striking out six and is now 4-2 on the year.

Moody finished the day a perfect 3-3 with four RBIs and two runs scored.  Flagstad has now tripled in two straight games and was also perfect going 2-2 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

The Saints (15-8, 7-0 UMAC) will be home again on Tuesday when they play host to the Northland LumberJacks (6-13, 3-3 UMAC) for a doubleheader at Wade Stadium.  First pitch of game one is scheduled for 4 p.m.
