Box Score ASHLAND, Wis. – The St. Scholastica baseball team broke open a tied game after six innings by scoring nine runs in the seven and eighth to defeat Northland College 12-3 on Tuesday at LumberJack Field.

The 'Jacks got up on the Saints early, plating two runs on a pair of singles in the bottom of the first inning. CSS cut the lead in half in the top of the third on a Kyle Moody (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS ) sacrifice fly that brought in Tom Spaniol (St. Joseph, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS ).

The Saints then took the lead in the top of the fifth on a Kyle Flagstad (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) RBI triple and a Parker Olson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Minn.-Duluth)) sacrifice fly to make it 3-2. However, the LumberJacks tied it in the bottom of the frame with another RBI single. Northland would not have an extra base hit all game.

After a scoreless sixth inning, the Saints broke it open in the top of the seventh. David Vogelgesang (Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) drew a bases loaded walk for the first run. Later in the inning with two outs, Jake Casareto (International Falls, Minn./Falls HS) came through with a bases-clearing three-run double to extend the CSS lead to 7-3.

St. Scholastica kept it rolling in the top of the eighth with RBI singles by Moody and Brandon Peterson (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) and then the big three-run home run by Vogelgesang to make it a 12-3 final.

Ben Grieger (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock HS) earned his second collegiate win in less than a week, going three innings and striking out three, including retiring the last seven consecutive batters that he faced. Joel Wuorio (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors HS) got the start and went four innings, scattering six hits. Thomas Rogers (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet HS ) was perfect in the final two innings of relief, striking out one.

Moody was 3-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in. Vogelgesang finished with four RBIs and Casareto with three hits and RBIs. The LumberJacks fall to 5-12 overall and 2-2 in the conference.
