DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team followed suit with the women's team on Saturday at the Arrowhead Tennis Center by defeated Northwestern College 7-2 and capturing its 16th consecutive Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season championship.
The Saints began the dual by taking two of the three doubles matches. The No. 2 team of
Kolin Dean (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander HS) and
James Mack (Portsmouth, England/Cams Hill School) won 8-6. The No. 3 team of
Tyler Bates (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) and
Cullen Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) were also victorious 8-4.
CSS controlled much of the singles action on the day as all five wins were in straight sets.
Jacob Engelstad (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS) won at the No. 1 spot 6-2, 6-4. At No. 2, Mack prevailed 6-2, 7-6 (7-4).
Dylan Kelly (Minneapolis, Minn./Minneapolis South HS) won at the No. 4 spot 6-1, 6-2. That was also the same winning score for
Nick Lambrecht (Stacy, Minn./North Branch HS (Minn.-Duluth)) at No. 6.
Kevin Hilpert (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) was the final winner on the day at No. 5 by scores of 6-2, 6-2. The Eagles fall to 11-9 overall and 7-2 in the league.
The Saints finished the regular season with a 16-7 record. The 16 wins are the most since the 2004 season and also ties a program record.
CSS will be in action next at the UMAC Championships next Friday and Saturday at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis. This season, the championships will be team-based with the top four teams in the UMAC standings advancing. The semifinals will be held on Friday night with the Saints either playing Martin Luther College or the University of Minnesota Morris. The championship will be held on Saturday.
