PREVIEW: Tennis Teams to Close out Regular Season at Home vs. Northwestern Saturday

DULUTH, Minn. – The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season title will be on the line on Saturday when the St. Scholastica men's and women's tennis teams face off against Northwestern College at the Arrowhead Tennis Center.

The Saints defeated both Martin Luther College and the University of Minnesota Morris over the weekend in the Burns Wellness Fieldhouse. CSS won both matches 9-0.

St. Scholastica Saints (15-7, 9-0 UMAC)
Saturday's match will be the last in Duluth for seniors Jacob Engelstad (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS), Kevin Hilpert (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS), Brian Lindberg (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS), Nick Lind (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet HS) and Tom Schneuer (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) … Engelstad has had a storied career for CSS, breaking the program record for career singles wins (58) and total wins (111) … He needs only one more doubles win to break the career record … He also holds the single-season record for wins with 18 set back in 2010 … Hilpert holds the program record for wins at No. 4 singles in career (17) … His 39 singles victories are the third-most in program history and he is ranked fifth for combined wins (87) … He set the single-season program record for doubles wins with 20 a season ago … Hilpert has won five straight singles matches this season … The Saints have won 15 matches this season, which is the most since the 2004 season when they won 16, which is also the program record for wins in a season … James Mack (Portsmouth, England/Cams Hill School) leads the team with 14 singles wins this season, while Engelstad has a team-high 15 doubles victories.  

Northwestern Eagles (10-9, 6-1 UMAC)
The Eagles are coming off a 9-0 victory over Minnesota Morris on Wednesday … Northwestern travels to Bethany Lutheran to face the Vikings later today … Also since playing the Saints last week, the Eagles defeated Saint Mary's University 7-2, but fell to Concordia College-Moorhead 6-3 … The only match losses in conference play this season have been against the Saints … Caleb Kauss leads the team with 15 singles wins this season … Keagan Blancke has won nine straight singles matches … Kauss and partner David Knight have 11 wins at No. 1 doubles this season, while the No. 2 team of Blancke and Jimmy Ekman have 10 wins.

The Saints defeated the Eagles on April 17th in Fridley by a score of 6-3. Kevin Hilpert (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) won in both singles and doubles play.

The young Saints squad will hope to close out the regular season with its sixth straight victory … CSS does not have a single senior on its roster and just two juniors … The Saints have shown a lot of consistency and depth with five players recording 12 or more singles wins this season, three of which are freshmen … Rachael Zwiener (St. Cloud, Minn./Home School) leads the team with 14 singles victories and 14 doubles wins … Megan Lawrence (Park Rapids, Minn./Park Rapids HS) has won 11 straight singles matches … The doubles teams of Zwiener and Hillary Bungarden (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) and Alexis Gunderson (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) and Allie Carlson (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin HS) each lead the team with eight wins.

Northwestern Eagles (9-11, 6-1 UMAC)
The Eagles snapped a three-match losing streak on Wednesday with 5-4 victory over Minnesota Morris … Since falling to the Saints last week, Northwestern fell to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and Concordia College-Moorhead … Megan Johnson and Rachel Smith each have 10 singles wins to lead the team … Johnson has all 10 of her wins at No. 1 singles … Johnson along with partner Kelly Johnson lead the squad with nine doubles wins … The Eagles are scheduled to play Bethany Lutheran College later this afternoon.

Last Meeting: (CSS All-Time Record vs. Northwestern: 29-0)
The Saints took down the Eagles in Fridley on Tuesday, April 17th by a score of 6-3. However, in that match the Saints suffered a pair of doubles defeats for the first time in UMAC play in program history.
